Main Teaching Session (15 minutes) – Planetary Investigation

Purpose: Demonstrating the effects of different planetary atmospheres.

Materials Needed:

  • Three small clear plastic bottles
  • Vinegar and bicarbonate of soda (for CO₂ – Venus and Mars)
  • Warm water (for Earth's atmosphere simulation)
  • Vacuum jar (if available, to remove air from a sample)

Steps:

  1. Place warm water into one bottle (this represents Earth, with a breathable atmosphere).
  2. In a second bottle, mix vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to produce carbon dioxide (representing the thick, CO₂-heavy atmosphere of Venus and Mars).
  3. If available, use a vacuum jar to demonstrate how Mercury has no atmosphere, making it extremely hot during the day but freezing at night.
  4. Discuss how planets with thick atmospheres retain heat and compare this to the conditions on Earth.

Discussion Questions:

  • Why is Venus the hottest planet, even though Mercury is closer to the Sun?
  • Could humans survive on Mars? Why or why not?

Plenary (10 minutes) – "If I Could Visit One" Debate

Purpose: Consolidate learning and encourage critical thinking.

  • Ask students: If you could visit one of the inner planets (except Earth), which one would it be and why?
  • Students have 2 minutes to think and write an answer. They then share their reasoning with the class.

Differentiation & Support

  • For Higher Ability Learners: Challenge them to research and present one unique fact about an inner planet that wasn’t covered in class.
  • For Lower Ability Learners: Provide sentence starters and a simplified version of the comparison table to help them participate in discussions.
