Lesson Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Understand the concept of addiction and its impact on mental and emotional health.
2. Identify different types of addictions that are most relevant to their age group.
3. Discuss healthy coping strategies and resources for support.

Lesson Outline (40 minutes)

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Hook: Begin with a thought-provoking question: "What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘addiction’?"
  • Allow students to volunteer answers.
  • Write key terms from their responses on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

• Explain the concept of addiction:

  • Definition: Repeated involvement with a substance or activity, despite substantial harm.
  • Highlight that addiction can be related to substances (like drugs or alcohol) or behaviours (like video gaming or social media).
  • Age-specific relevance: Emphasize addictions commonly discussed at their age—smartphone, social media, and video games.

• Impact on Health:

  • Explain how addiction affects mental and emotional well-being, including factors like stress, anxiety, and peer pressure.

Interactive Activity: Scenario Analysis (15 minutes)

• Divide students into groups of three. Hand out worksheets with scenarios illustrating different types of addictions (e.g., excessive gaming, compulsive smartphone use, etc.).

• Group Task:

  • Read and discuss the scenario.
  • Identify the type of addiction depicted.
  • Discuss the potential impacts on the individual's health and relationships.
  • Brainstorm one healthy coping mechanism or solution.

• Class Discussion:

  • Have each group present their scenario and findings to the class.
  • Encourage other students to ask questions and provide additional suggestions for coping strategies.

Video Presentation (5 minutes)

• Show a short video (3 minutes) illustrating a personal story about overcoming addiction.
• Engage students with a follow-up question: "What emotions did you feel during the video and why do you think the person’s journey was important?"

Conclusion (3 minutes)

• Summary: Recap key points—definition of addiction, types, effects on health, and coping strategies.
• Reflection: Provide each student with an index card. Ask them to write one thing they learned and one question they still have. Collect these for future discussions or a follow-up lesson.

Extension Activity (if time permits or for homework)

• Poster Creation: Ask students to create a poster in groups that promotes healthy coping strategies for avoiding addiction. Display these in class for ongoing reference.
