Standard: 3.NF.A.1 — Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
Lesson Objective
By the end of this 50-minute lesson, students will:
- Understand the concept of fractions as parts of a whole.
- Identify numerators and denominators.
- Represent simple fractions using visuals (e.g., shapes, objects).
- Relate fractions to everyday situations, enhancing real-world connections.
Materials Needed
- A large circle/pizza cutout split into 8 equal parts (laminated for reusability).
- Paper plates for each student.
- Colouring pencils or crayons.
- Fraction flashcards (e.g., 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, etc.).
- A small bag of snacks (e.g., crackers or pretzels) grouped into packs of 8 for hands-on group activity.
- Fraction Bingo sheets and pencils.
- Whiteboard and markers.
Lesson Breakdown
Introduction (10 minutes)
Engage Students Through a Fun Question
Write on the board:
"If I have a pizza and share half with my best friend, how much of the pizza do I keep?"
- Allow a few students to respond with their thoughts.
- Draw a large pizza on the board and visually demonstrate cutting it into halves.
- Label the two parts: 1/2 and 1/2. Underline the keywords: numerator and denominator (briefly explain these terms).
Teacher’s Explanation:
Fractions represent parts of a whole. The number on top (numerator) tells us how many parts we have. The number on the bottom (denominator) tells us the total number of parts we split the whole into. Use class participation to repeat these terms.
Core Activities (30 minutes)
Activity 1: Build A Fraction with Pizza (8 minutes)
- Show your circle pizza cut into 8 equal parts.
- Pick a student to "order a pizza," then ask how much they want (e.g., “I want 3/8”).
- Remove 3 slices and stick them on the board. Write "3/8" next to it.
- Repeat with 3-4 different students using various fractions (e.g., 1/8, 4/8, etc.).
Key Concept Wrap-Up: Every fraction shows how many pieces you take out of the total parts.
Activity 2: Create Your Own Fractions (10 minutes)
- Hand out paper plates to each student and ask them to fold or draw lines on their plate to split it into 8 identical pieces.
- Let the students colour in a certain number of pieces to represent their favourite fraction (e.g., 3/8, 4/8). Encourage creativity!
- Circulate the classroom, asking students to say their fraction aloud.
Activity 3: Snack Fraction Groups (7 minutes)
Divide the class into groups of 4.
- Give each group a small bag of 8 crackers and ask them to:
- Share 1/2 of the crackers equally amongst each other.
- Split 1/4 of the crackers amongst two students.
- Give a 3/8 portion to one student, etc.
- Rotate different "fractions" so they can see how the same set of objects gets divided differently.
Key Question: How does everyone get a fair share without making mistakes?
Game Time: Fraction Bingo (5 minutes)
- Each student gets a Fraction Bingo card marked with fractions like 1/2, 1/4, 2/8, etc.
- Teacher calls out fractions based on snacks or visuals (e.g., “I ate 1/4 of a cake”). Students mark the corresponding fractions.
- First to complete a row yells, "BINGO!"
Closing and Reflection (10 Minutes)
- Class Discussion (3-4 minutes)
Ask:
- What did you enjoy about fractions today?
- Why is it important to understand fractions?
Encourage real-world examples! (e.g., “cutting a sandwich,” “sharing snacks,” “measuring in a recipe”).
