Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 4 of 10 in the unit "Wiggly Worm Wonders". Lesson Title: Parts of a Worm Lesson Description: Continuing from the previous lesson, students will learn about the body parts of a worm. They will watch a video, label parts using interactive slides, and complete a cut-and-paste labeling activity. Learning Goal: Students will identify and label the main body parts of a worm. Accommodations: Use bilingual labels for ELL students to support vocabulary acquisition.

Worm Body Parts

Overview

This 45-minute lesson is designed for kindergarten students as Lesson 4 in the “Wiggly Worm Wonders” unit. It aligns with the California Common Core State Standards (CA CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS) appropriate for kindergarten science and language development. The lesson introduces students to the main body parts of a worm using multimodal learning strategies including video, interactive activities, and hands-on cut-and-paste exercises. Bilingual labels support English Language Learners (ELLs) to develop vocabulary and concept understanding.

Standards Alignment

CA NGSS:

  • K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including worms) need to survive.
  • K-ESS3-1: Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of animals and the places they live.

CA CCSS English Language Arts (Kindergarten):

  • ELD.PI.K.P1: Exchanging information and ideas with others through oral collaborative conversations on a range of social and academic topics.
  • RF.K.1a: Recognise and produce rhyming words (supporting phonological awareness)

Learning Goal

  • Students will be able to identify and label the key body parts of a worm: head, tail, segments, and setae (bristles).
  • Students will develop basic scientific vocabulary in English and Spanish to describe worm body parts.

Materials

  • Chart paper or whiteboard
  • Bilingual “Worm Body Parts” poster (English/Spanish labels)
  • Projector or smartboard
  • Pre-selected educational video about worm anatomy (3-5 minutes; age-appropriate)
  • Interactive digital slides for worm labeling (can be displayed on smartboard or tablets)
  • Printable cut-and-paste worksheets with worm diagram and body part labels in English & Spanish
  • Safety scissors, glue sticks, crayons or coloured pencils
  • Name tags with worm body parts printed in English and Spanish, for classroom use
  • Optional sensory bins with toy worms to allow tactile connection

Vocabulary

  • Worm / Lombriz
  • Head / Cabeza
  • Tail / Cola
  • Segments / Segmentos
  • Setae (bristles) / Cerdas

Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Greet the class and briefly revisit the prior lesson about what worms need to survive. Use simple questions: “Who remembers what worms like to eat?”
  • Introduce today’s focus: the parts of a worm’s body. Show the bilingual chart and point to each part as you say its name in English and Spanish. Model pronunciation clearly.

2. Watch & Discuss Video (7 minutes)

  • Play a short, engaging video that clearly shows a worm’s body and explains its parts.
  • Pause at key parts (head, tail, segments, setae) and ask the class to repeat or point them out on their fingers or desks.
  • Ask a few simple comprehension questions: “Where is the worm’s head? Does the worm have legs?”

3. Interactive Digital Labeling (10 minutes)

  • Display the interactive slides where students come up and drag and drop labels onto a large worm diagram projected on the board.
  • Have several volunteers label the parts aloud in both languages.
  • Incorporate movement: when a part is labelled, students wiggle like worms to reinforce learning kinesthetically.

4. Cut-and-Paste Activity (15 minutes)

  • Hand out cut-and-paste worksheets. Students cut out the labels and paste them onto the corresponding parts of their worm diagram.
  • Encourage bilingual labelling: English on top, Spanish below or side by side.
  • Circulate and provide support, especially for ELL students, by prompting vocabulary and helping with fine motor skills.

5. Sharing & Wrap-up (5-7 minutes)

  • Invite 3–4 students to share their labelled worms with the class, saying one or two parts in English and Spanish.
  • Review the key vocabulary again using the chart and encourage the class to wiggle like worms and shout out the parts with you one last time.
  • Connect learning to next lesson by saying: “Next time, we will learn how worms help the soil!”

Differentiation & Accommodations

  • Use visual aids and bilingual vocabulary consistently for ELLs.
  • Provide labelled name tags for students to wear that reinforce worm vocabulary.
  • For students with fine motor difficulties, provide pre-cut labels or allow verbal responses during activities.
  • Use peer buddies to support language and tasks.
  • Incorporate motion and songs to engage kinesthetic learners.

Assessment & Reflection

  • Observe student participation during interactive labeling and cut-and-paste activity.
  • Use informal questioning to assess vocabulary comprehension.
  • Collect worksheets to check for correct matching of labels.
  • Note any students requiring extra support for one-on-one follow-up.
  • Reflect on whether students can confidently name parts in both languages and participate actively in discussions.

Extensions & Home Connection

  • Send home a simple bilingual “worm body parts” handout or craft for families to review and practise together.
  • Encourage families to explore soil outdoors and find evidence of worms.
  • Suggest reading bilingual picture books about worms for extra reinforcement.

This lesson uses multisensory, language-rich approaches aligned with CA standards and developmentally appropriate practices for kindergarten. The bilingual support and hands-on activities will engage diverse learners and build crucial foundational knowledge for deeper life science understanding in future lessons.
