Teaching Instructions

Students will be learning about the digestive system, start by asking the students what do they know about which organs are in our digestive system. Hang the coloured organ on the whiteboard so the students can see the corresponding colour. Hand each student the worksheets and they will be colour to the corresponding colour of the organ. Remind the students to keep the pages together for the next class.

Discovering Digestion

Lesson Objective

To understand the basic components and functions of the digestive system, aligning with the 4th Grade California Health Education Standards (Standard 1: Essential Concepts — Nutrition and Physical Activity).

Materials Needed

  • Coloured organ cut-outs (Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Student worksheets (featuring organs of the digestive system in black and white)
  • Crayons or coloured pencils
  • Tape or magnets for attaching organ cut-outs to the board

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Engage Students: Start with an engaging question: "Who has ever thought about what happens to our food after we swallow it? Which organs do you think are part of the digestive system?"
  2. Discussion: Allow students to share their thoughts and familiar terms. Jot down their responses on the board as a brainstorm map.

Hands-On Activity: Building the Digestive System (15 minutes)

  1. Interactive Demonstration:

    • Present the coloured organ cut-outs.
    • As each organ is introduced, provide a brief explanation of its function.
    • Hang each organ cut-out on the whiteboard using tape or magnets in the order they appear in the digestive process: Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder.
  2. Student Involvement:

    • Ask students to help attach the cut-outs and invite quick questions for each organ.

Independent Student Work (15 minutes)

  1. Worksheet Distribution:

    • Hand out the worksheets, which depict the organs of the digestive system in black and white outline format.
    • Explain that each student should colour the organ on their worksheet to match the corresponding colour of the organ on the whiteboard. E.g., If the stomach on the board is blue, they colour their stomach the same shade of blue.
  2. Instructions & Encouragement:

    • Encourage careful work and emphasize the importance of keeping the pages tidy and ready for the next class.

Conclusion & Clean-Up (5 minutes)

  1. Review:

    • Quickly review the role of each organ using the whiteboard display.
    • Reinforce the sequence of how food travels through the digestive system.
  2. Preview Next Class:

    • Mention that in the next lesson, students will continue discussing how each part of the system works more in-depth.
  3. Collect Materials:

    • Remind students to keep their works together as they will be needed in future lessons.

Assessment

  • Informal Observation: Monitor the students during the activity to ensure they are matching the colours correctly and understanding the organ's role.
  • Worksheet Check: At the end of the class, do a quick check as students hand in their coloured worksheets.

Additional Notes

  • This lesson plan adheres to the California 4th Grade Health Content Standards, targeting students' understanding of basic bodily systems with a focus on practical, engaging learning experiences.
  • Encouraging students’ curiosity about their own bodies promotes lifelong health literacy.

By creatively blending visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic learning styles, this lesson provides a comprehensive, age-appropriate approach to the digestive system while fostering an engaging learning environment.
