Objectives
- Students will be able to introduce themselves and others effectively in English.
- Students will engage in meaningful conversations using structured dialogues.
- Students will enhance their listening and speaking skills pertinent to introductions.
Materials
- Whiteboard and markers
- Handouts with introductory phrases
- Name tags
- Timer or stopwatch
- Speakers
Preparation
- Prepare handouts with key phrases for introductions.
- Write an example introduction on the whiteboard.
- Arrange the classroom seating to facilitate pair and group work.
Lesson Plan
1. Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes)
Objective: Transition students into English mode and build a fun, interactive environment.
Activity: Two Truths and a Lie
- Each student will write down two true statements and one false statement about themselves.
- They will then take turns sharing these with the class.
- The class will guess which statement is the lie.
2. Introduction & Objective Setting (5 minutes)
Objective: Clearly explain the lesson goals.
Teacher explains:
- Today's focus will be on introducing ourselves and others.
- Students will practise using structured phrases to help them confidently make introductions.
3. Explicit Teaching (10 minutes)
Objective: Introduce key phrases and structures used in effective introductions.
- Write example on the board: "Hello, my name is [Name]. I am [age] years old and I am from [place]."
- Hand out "Introduction Phrases" worksheet.
- Discuss formal vs. informal greetings.
- Practice pronunciation and intonation as a class.
4. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Objective: Engage students in structured dialogue practice.
Activity: Pair Introductions
- Split students into pairs.
- Each pair will use the handout to introduce themselves to each other.
- Students will also introduce their partner to the class, encouraging active listening and note-taking.
5. Independent Practice (5 minutes)
Objective: Provide students with an opportunity to use the language independently.
Activity: Speed Introductions
- Students will stand in two lines facing each other (Line A & Line B).
- Students in Line A will have 1 minute to introduce themselves to the person directly opposite in Line B.
- After 1 minute, the students in Line B will move down a spot.
6. Closing (5 minutes)
Objective: Reflect on learning and provide feedback.
- Ask students to share one new thing they learned about a classmate.
- Gather feedback on what they found challenging or enjoyable.
- Summarize key points and remind students to practice introductions outside of class.
Assessment
- Informal assessment through observation during pair and group activities.
- Participation in the closing reflection.
Differentiation
For Advanced Students:
- Encourage the use of more complex sentences, such as discussing hobbies or future goals.
For Students Needing More Support:
- Provide pre-written sentence starters.
- Pair them with students who can provide additional guidance.
Reflection
- Encourage students to write a short paragraph for homework about their experience practising introductions.
- Follow up in the next lesson by revisiting these introductions with new pairs for continuous practice.
