Faction Identity & Choice

Lesson Overview

This 70-minute lesson engages Year 9 students in exploring themes of identity and choice in Divergent by Veronica Roth. Using quick writes and group collaboration, students will analyze faction characteristics, reflect on Chapters 1-2, and engage with Chapter 3.

This lesson aligns with the BC Curriculum for English Language Arts 9, specifically focusing on:

  • Comprehend and Connect: Engage with texts to explore diverse perspectives (ELA9-C1)
  • Create and Communicate: Express and support opinions with textual evidence (ELA9-C2)
  • Critical Thinking: Analyze character motivations and choices in literature (ELA9-C3)

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Analyze the characteristics of factions and their societal roles.
  2. Reflect on Beatrice and Caleb’s choices through a journal entry.
  3. Collaborate in groups to finalize faction traits and prepare for the Choosing Ceremony.
  4. Read and Discuss Chapter 3, connecting to prior knowledge.

Lesson Structure (70 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up: Quick Write (15 min)

Purpose: Engage critical thinking and personal connection to the novel.

  • Prompt: What factors influence the choices we make? Think about pressure from family, society, or personal values. Write a short response (5-7 sentences).
  • Students write individually for 5 min, then pair up to discuss their responses briefly.
  • Class Share: Select 3-4 students to summarize their discussion.

Teacher Cue: “Beatrice faces a difficult choice in Divergent. How do values, expectations, and emotions influence decisions?"

2. Reviewing Chapters 1-2: Group Discussion (10 min)

Purpose: Recall key events and themes before moving forward.

  • Guiding Questions:

    1. What do we know about the five factions so far?
    2. How does Beatrice feel about her aptitude test results?
    3. What societal pressures influence her and Caleb?
  • Break students into small groups (4-5 per group). Each group discusses and compiles key takeaways, which they write on a shared poster or digital document.

  • Exit Ticket (Mini Reflection): One student per group summarizes their faction discussion aloud in one sentence.

Teacher Cue: “What would it feel like to make a decision that impacts your entire future?”

3. Faction Finalization & Choosing Ceremony Prep (15 min)

Purpose: Deepen understanding of faction characteristics through collaboration.

  • Assign each group one faction (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, Erudite).
  • Groups spend 10 minutes finalizing key characteristics: values, behaviours, drawbacks.
  • Each group chooses a leader to present their final findings in one minute.
  • Groups prepare for a future Choosing Ceremony Simulation, where students will “choose” their faction.

Teacher Cue: “Based on what you’ve discussed, which faction do you think you would fit into? Would your choice differ from your test results?"

4. Chapter 3 Read-Aloud & Discussion (15 min)

Purpose: Engage with the text and apply prior analysis to Beatrice’s experience.

  • Teacher reads selected passages aloud OR students read in small groups, identifying key moments.
  • Think-Pair-Share Discussion:
    • What emotions does Beatrice feel before choosing?
    • How does the build-up of tension affect the reader’s experience?
    • Would you have made the same choice in her position?

Textual Focus: Highlight Roth’s use of inner conflict, descriptive language, and foreshadowing in shaping Beatrice’s decision.

5. Reflective Quick Write: Journal Entry (15 min)

Purpose: Deepen empathy for characters and strengthen writing skills.

Prompt: Write a journal entry from the perspective of either Beatrice or Caleb on the night before the Choosing Ceremony.

  • Students must include:

    • Inner conflicts and doubts
    • Reactions to their aptitude test results
    • Predictions for the future
  • Students Write Independently (10 min)

  • Peer Swap (5 min): Exchange journals with a partner and provide one comment or question on their writing.

Teacher Cue: “Imagine you are on the verge of making a life-altering decision. What thoughts would go through your mind?"

Assessment & Reflection

  • Formative Assessment:

    • Quick Write responses to gauge critical thinking.
    • Group poster discussions to assess comprehension.
    • Peer feedback on journal entries for writing skills.
  • Exit Ticket Reflection: “In one sentence, summarize Beatrice’s biggest challenge in Chapter 3.”

Differentiation Strategies

  • Struggling Writers: Sentence starters for the journal entry.
  • Advanced Learners: Ask them to write from both Beatrice’s and Caleb’s perspectives.
  • ELL Support: Provide a vocabulary list with key terms like conflict, choice, pressure, faction.

Teacher Notes & Extensions

  • Extensions: Host a full Choosing Ceremony next class where students officially “choose” their factions based on today’s discussions.
  • Real-World Connection: Compare faction choices to real-life career pathways.

Summary

By blending quick writes, discussion, and creative writing, this lesson builds textual analysis, critical thinking, and empathy for characters—key skills aligned with BC’s ELA 9 standards.
