Teaching Instructions

This lesson plan is for my first class, and I want it to be fun. Obviously, the student will be part of the learning as always. Maybe I could help with Hello and Hi and goodbye and bye. Then move into very short sentences like What is your name? and more. Role playing too and make it fun .... colorful

Friendly Greetings Practice

Grade Level

Kindergarten / Grade 1 (Ages 5-6)

Duration

2 minutes

Learning Standards

This lesson aligns with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, specifically:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A: Print many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.B: Recognise and name end punctuation.

Lesson Objective

By the end of this 2-minute interactive lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Use basic greetings "Hello," "Hi," and farewells "Goodbye," "Bye."
  • Ask and answer simple questions such as “What is your name?”
  • Engage in a short, playful role-play conversation practising these greetings and questions.

Materials

  • Colourful flashcards with words: Hello, Hi, Goodbye, Bye, What is your name?
  • Name tag sticker (for student)
  • A fun puppet or soft toy to “talk” with the student
  • Bright marker and mini whiteboard or paper

Procedure

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (30 seconds)

  • Teacher shows a colourful flashcard saying Hello! and waves enthusiastically.
  • Model: “Hello! Can you say hello?” (Wait for student.)
  • Repeat with Hi! and make it cheerful and exaggerated.
  • Then, show Goodbye! and wave again, and “Bye!” in a playful voice.
  • Engage the student by asking, “Can you say hi and bye too?”

2. Introduce Question (45 seconds)

  • Hold up the flashcard for “What is your name?” with colourful letters.
  • Model clearly: “What is your name?”
  • Point to yourself and say your name.
  • Invite student: “Now your turn! What is your name?”
  • If needed, write the student’s name on the whiteboard/paper, emphasising the letter shapes.

3. Role Play with Puppet (45 seconds)

  • Bring out the puppet or soft toy.
  • Puppet says: “Hello! What is your name?” (Use a funny voice.)
  • Student responds.
  • Puppet says “Nice to meet you, [student’s name]. Bye!” and waves.
  • Teacher encourages student to respond with “Bye!” back to the puppet.
  • Switch roles quickly, allowing student to be the puppet greeting the teacher.

4. Closing (15 seconds)

  • Cheer enthusiastically: “Great job! You said hello, goodbye, and your name!”
  • Give student a sticker for participation.
  • Teacher models “Hello!” and “Bye!” one last time, waving.

Teaching Tips

  • Use exaggerated tones and bright colours to capture and maintain attention in this very short lesson.
  • Encourage student movement (waving, smiling) to keep energy high in 2 minutes.
  • Adults/teacher should use clear, slow pronunciation to support language acquisition.
  • Repetition with variation (puppet voice vs. teacher voice) supports comprehension and engagement.

Assessment

  • Informal observation: Did the student respond to greetings and questions?
  • Did the student participate in role play with enthusiasm?
  • Did the student accurately say “Hello,” “Hi,” “Goodbye,” “Bye,” and “What is your name?”

Reflection

This ultra-short session focuses on building confidence with basic social English through active engagement and playful interaction, fostering a positive attitude toward language learning from Day 1. The colourful visual aids and puppet role play ignite curiosity and make learning memorable, ticking all key boxes in a delightful, high-impact way for young CA learners.
