I want to focus on addition for grade 2 level

Fun with Addition

Overview

This 5-minute highly engaging and interactive lesson is designed for 2nd-grade students in alignment with the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CA CCSSM). Specifically, the lesson targets Grade 2 - Operations and Algebraic Thinking (2.OA.2): Fluently add within 20 using mental strategies.

The aim is to make students excited about addition through a fun and creative group activity while reinforcing key fluency skills.

Learning Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  • Accurately solve addition problems within 20 using mental strategies.
  • Work collaboratively in a fun and time-sensitive group challenge.

Materials Needed

  • 10 small index cards (one number on each: 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, etc.)
  • A small whiteboard or chart paper for the teacher
  • Colourful markers
  • A timer/stopwatch

Lesson Steps

1. Start with a Quick Warm-Up (1 minute)

Begin by gathering the 10 students in a circle. Hold up a marker and enthusiastically say:
“Let’s warm up our minds with a quick addition challenge! Raise your hand as soon as you know the answer to this!”

Say two simple addition problems aloud (e.g., “What is 7 + 3? What is 5 + 5?”). Once two students respond correctly, praise the class for their focus and effort.

2. Introduce the Challenge Game (1 minute)

Explain the activity with excitement. Say:
“We are going to play the Addition Matching Race! I will give each of you a card with a number on it. Your job is to find a friend whose number, when added to yours, makes 15!”

Hand out one numbered index card to each student. You may randomly assign cards to promote problem-solving. Place a timer and announce:
“You all have one minute to silently think, search, and partner up. The pair that completes it quickest gets a round of applause!”

3. Let the Game Begin! (2 minutes)

  • Start the timer.
  • Students must mentally add their number to others’ to find a partner with a sum of 15. When a match is made, pairs must sit down to signal they’ve completed the challenge.
  • The teacher observes and encourages problem-solving aloud: “What number do you need to make 15?” or “Keep looking – who could still be your match?”

Once all students are paired, the teacher goes over how they reached 15, ensuring the correct matches are celebrated.

Example Matchups:
3 + 12 = 15, 7 + 8 = 15.

4. Wrap-Up with Quick Discussion (1 minute)

Bring students back to the circle and say:
“Great job, everyone! Let’s quickly review. If you had the number 10, what number were you looking for?” Pause for responses. Repeat with other cards to reinforce reasoning skills.

Conclude by praising their teamwork and speed, then add:
“See how we used thinking, searching, and counting? That’s how math helps us every day!”

Differentiation

  1. For Advanced Learners: Challenge pairs to find more than one possible match (e.g., finding two different numbers to make 15).
  2. For Struggling Learners: Reduce the total to 10 instead of 15 and offer one-on-one guidance.

Assessment

Informal observation of students' problem-solving, mental math skills, and ability to match their card correctly. Use their participation and enthusiasm as additional indicators of success.

Notes for the Teacher

This lesson blends social interaction, mental math, and friendly competition to keep students engaged. Encouraging positive reinforcement and celebrating small wins will make this short but potent lesson unforgettable.
