Teaching Instructions

I want students to focus on animals like beaver, porcupine, rabbit, mice, muskrat, owl, raven, mink, duck, goose, bald eagle, seagull in english and cree. I want to use the method we do, you do, I do. Create me activity that involves everyone. I will use the Brian Mcdonald song to identify animals.

Lesson Structure

Warm-Up (5 minutes) - Animal Movements

  1. Teacher’s Action (I Do):

    • The teacher acts out an animal (e.g., flapping arms like a raven or hopping like a rabbit).
    • Says the name of the animal in English and Cree (e.g., "Rabbit – Wapoos").
  2. Whole Class (We Do):

    • Students mirror the teacher’s movements and repeat the animal names together.
  3. Student-Led (You Do):

    • A few students take turns acting out an animal while the class guesses the name and repeats it together.

Main Lesson (25 minutes) - Learning with Songs & Matching

Part 1: Listening & Identifying Animals (10 minutes)

  1. Teacher’s Action (I Do):

    • Play the Brian McDonald song and encourage students to listen carefully.
    • Point to animals on the flashcards as they’re mentioned in the song.
  2. Whole Class Call & Response (We Do):

    • Pause at different points and ask students to name the animal in both English and Cree.
    • Encourage participation by making animal sounds or mimicking movements.
  3. Student-Led Naming (You Do):

    • Split students into small groups and give each one flashcards.
    • They will hold up the correct card while the song plays.

Part 2: Hands-On Matching Game (15 minutes)

  1. Teacher’s Action (I Do):

    • Show students how to match animal pictures to their names (in both English and Cree) on a large chart.
  2. Group Work Activity (We Do):

    • Pair students up and give them cut-out animal pictures and name cards.
    • They must match the animals to the correct names.
  3. Student-Led (You Do):

    • Call on students to share what animals they matched.
    • Reinforce pronunciation by repeating the names as a class.

Wrap-Up (10 minutes) - Reflect & Review

  1. Quickfire Recall Game:

    • The teacher calls out a name in either English or Cree, and students point to/make the movement of the correct animal.
  2. Discussion (Encouraging Language Development):

    • Ask: "Which animal was your favourite? Can you say its name in Cree?"
    • Let students share their answers.
  3. Goodbye Song:

    • End with a short chant using the animal names in both languages.

Assessment & Reflection

  • Informal Observation: Watch for student participation and engagement in movements and naming.
  • Oral Feedback: Ask students to name one animal they learned today.
  • Group Work Check-in: Ensure students correctly match animals to names in their small groups.

Teacher Notes

  • Keep pronunciation guides handy for Cree words.
  • Use exaggerated movements to make the activity engaging.
  • Ensure all students participate in at least one way (acting, naming, or matching).
  • Encourage positive reinforcement and celebrate correct answers.

This lesson plan is interactive, uses multiple learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), and aligns with the CA Kindergarten Social Studies curriculum focus on local knowledge and language integration.
