Teaching Instructions

can you please create a lesson plan and creative idea for Mothers Day. Have my kids do a lovely craft for their mother. Some materials i have in the classroom are chinese paper boxes, clothes pin, ribbons, fake flowers. Can you create a lesson plan with learning objectives, WALT, success criteria, equipment and adding a hook, introduction, body of lesson, and conclusion for the learning sequence. Make this creative and enjoyable for my students. Make it personal and connections with their family (whanua).

Mothers Day Craft

Learning Objectives

  • Students will understand the importance of celebrating and appreciating family members, specifically mothers or caregivers.
  • Students will engage in creative expression by designing a personalised craft gift using various materials.
  • Students will develop fine motor skills and spatial awareness through assembling a decorative gift box.
  • Students will foster empathy and connection by reflecting on their family (whānau) relationships as inspiration for their artwork.

  • Create a meaningful and beautiful craft gift for someone special using paper boxes, clothespins, ribbons, and faux flowers.
  • Use art materials safely and creatively while expressing feelings of love and appreciation.

Success Criteria

Curriculum Connections

This lesson aligns with California Visual and Performing Arts Standards for Kindergarten–Grade 2, particularly:

  • Visual Arts Content Standard 1.1: Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.
  • Visual Arts Content Standard 1.2: Using artistic processes and skills to communicate ideas.
  • Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Demonstrating empathy and compassion toward family and others.
  • English Language Arts (Speaking & Listening): Sharing personal experiences with peers.

Lesson Sequence (15 minutes)

Hook (3 minutes)

Begin by inviting students to think about someone in their family (whānau) who they love and appreciate—this could be a mother, grandmother, aunt, or caregiver. Initiate a brief conversation:

  • “Who do you want to make something special for today?”
  • “What do you love about this person?”
Encourage 1-2 students to share quick sentences about their special person to build connection and anticipation.

Introduction (2 minutes)

Show the materials laid out on the table. Explain that they will be making a beautiful gift box decorated with flowers and ribbons for their special person. They will also create a personal message or drawing to clip onto the box with a clothespin. Emphasize that it’s okay to be creative and make their gift unique to show how much they care.

Body of Lesson (8 minutes)

  1. Decorating the Box: Demonstrate how to carefully glue flowers and ribbons on the box. Encourage students to think about their special person’s favourite colours or flowers as a guide.
  2. Creating the Message: Invite students to write or draw something special on their small piece of paper—this could be “I love you,” a drawing of their mom, or a thank you message. Offer support with writing if needed.
  3. Clipping the Note: Show how to use the clothespin to attach the message to the box, making sure it’s visible.
  4. Clean up: Students use wet wipes or paper towels to clean hands and keep their area tidy.

Conclusion (2 minutes)

Ask each student to hold up their finished box and share one thing they included and why. Reinforce how their artwork is a way to say “Thank you” and “I love you” to someone important in their life. End by encouraging them to give their gift with a big smile and maybe a hug.

Additional Teaching Tips

  • Emphasise Māori whānau concepts and the importance of expressing affection in a meaningful culturally responsive way.
  • Use positive reinforcement to celebrate creative efforts and thoughtful messages.
  • Adapt the writing task for ELL or younger students by allowing drawings alone or simple words.
  • Keep discussion warm and inclusive, honouring all types of family structures.

This quick yet heartfelt craft activity integrates CA Visual Arts standards with social-emotional learning, offering students a tangible way to celebrate and connect with their loved ones on Mother’s Day.
