Overview

Lesson Procedure

1. Engage (5 minutes)

  • Show students pictures of a tree, rabbit, and mushroom briefly. Ask the class to think about what they notice about these living things.
  • Introduce the big idea: Every living thing has a role in the environment — producers make food, consumers eat food, and decomposers break down waste.

2. Explore (10 minutes)

3. Explain (8 minutes)

  • Regroup and discuss findings. Draw a large three-column chart on the board labelled “Producers”, “Consumers”, and “Decomposers”.

  • Clarify any misunderstandings, emphasising:
    • Producers make their own food through photosynthesis (plants, algae).
    • Consumers eat other organisms for energy (animals).
    • Decomposers break down dead matter, recycling nutrients (fungi, bacteria, worms).
  • Introduce and draw a simple food chain on the board, for example: grass → rabbit → fox → mushroom.
  • Use “Energy Flow” arrows to show how energy moves from producers to consumers to decomposers.

4. Elaborate (8 minutes)

  • Food Chain Creation: Provide each group with large paper or poster boards and ask them to create their own food chain using the pictures/cards and arrows.
  • Encourage creativity — they can draw the organism or use cutouts, add labels, and arrows showing energy flow.
  • After completing, groups will present their food chain model briefly to the class.

5. Evaluate (4 minutes)

  • Hand out a worksheet or have students record in their notebooks:
    • List one producer, one consumer, and one decomposer they learned today.
    • Draw a simple food chain using these organisms, adding arrows.
  • Collect quick exit tickets answering the question: "Why are decomposers important in nature?"
