Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 2 of 4 in the unit "Understanding Substance Impact". Lesson Title: Short-Term Effects of Substances on the Body Lesson Description: Students will learn about the immediate effects of smoking, alcohol, and cannabis on the body and mind. Through interactive activities, they will identify how these substances can alter mood, behavior, and physical health, emphasizing the importance of awareness.

Short-Term Substance Effects

Overview

This 30-minute lesson is designed for a class of 30 students aged 12-14 (Grades 7-8) in California. It is the second lesson in the four-lesson unit titled Understanding Substance Impact. Students will explore the immediate physiological and psychological effects of smoking, alcohol, and cannabis, with an emphasis on how these substances alter mood, behaviour, and physical health.

This lesson uses California Health Education Content Standards and the CA Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Literacy in Science to foster critical thinking and health awareness.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Describe short-term effects of smoking, alcohol, and cannabis on the human body and mind.
  • Explain how these substances impact mood, behaviour, and physical functions.
  • Demonstrate awareness of why understanding these effects is crucial for making healthy choices.

California Health Education Content Standards

  • Standard 1.H.E.1: Describe how healthy behaviours can prevent diseases and health problems.
  • Standard 1.H.E.2: Describe personal susceptibility to health problems related to tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
  • Standard 2.H.E.3: Identify the short- and long-term effects of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use.

CA CCSS for Literacy in Science

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.7: Integrate visual information with text to support comprehension.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Projector or smartboard
  • Printed “Effect Cards” (describe short-term effects of each substance — 3 cards per student)
  • Large chart paper with headings: Smoking, Alcohol, Cannabis
  • Sticky notes (2 per student)
  • Timer/stopwatch

Lesson Procedure

1. Warm-Up & Connection (5 minutes)

  • Think-Pair-Share:
Pose the question: “What do you already know about how smoking, alcohol, or cannabis affect people right after using them?”
Give students 1 minute to think individually, then 2 minutes to discuss with a partner.
  • Invite 3-4 pairs to share their ideas in 2 minutes. Write key words on the board.

2. Interactive Mini-Presentation (7 minutes)

  • Use visuals and diagrams projected onto the screen to explain:
    • Smoking: short-term effects like coughing, increased heart rate, bad breath, dizziness.
    • Alcohol: impaired coordination, slurred speech, lowered inhibitions, nausea.
    • Cannabis: altered senses, impaired memory, increased heart rate, dry mouth.
  • Use simple, age-appropriate language and emphasise changes in mood and physical responses.

3. Group “Effect Sorting” Activity (10 minutes)

  • Distribute the printed “Effect Cards” randomly to all students.
  • Students silently read their card, then stand and place their card under the correct heading on the chart paper (Smoking, Alcohol, Cannabis).
  • Once all cards are sorted, choose 3 “effect experts” (one per substance) to review the cards under their category and explain why each effect happens shortly after using that substance.
  • Teacher facilitates and clarifies any misconceptions using quick questions.

4. Reflection and Awareness Discussion (5 minutes)

  • Ask students to write on two sticky notes:
    1. One new thing they learned about how substances affect the body immediately.
    2. One reason why knowing these short-term effects is important in daily life.
  • Students place sticky notes on the board under “What I Learned” and “Why It Matters.”

5. Closing Summary & Exit Ticket (3 minutes)

  • Summarise the key points:
“Smoking, alcohol, and cannabis quickly affect how your body and mind behave. These changes can impact safety, health, and decision-making.”
  • Exit Ticket Prompt: On a slip of paper, students write down one short-term effect and how it could affect a person’s mood or behaviour. Collect before they leave.

Assessment & Differentiation

  • Formative assessment via class discussions, sorting activity, and exit tickets.
  • For English Language Learners or students needing support, provide effect cards with visuals and simplified text.
  • Challenge advanced learners with an extension question during group discussion: “How could these short-term effects lead to risky situations?”

Teacher Reflection Prompts

  • Did the think-pair-share successfully activate prior knowledge?
  • How engaged were students in the interactive sorting?
  • Were misconceptions about effects effectively addressed?
  • Did the lesson adequately balance mood, behavioural, and physical health impacts?

Extensions & Home Connection

  • Assign students to track and journal any advertisements or media messages they see involving smoking, alcohol, or cannabis, noting any references to short-term effects.
  • Encourage a family conversation about substance effects using a guided question sheet.

This lesson uses multimodal instruction, peer collaboration, and real-time formative checks, aligned with California’s scaffolded approach to substance use education, to build informed health literacy and decision-making skills.
