Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 3 of 5 in the unit "Paragraph Power: Summer Writing". Lesson Title: Supporting Details: Expanding Our Ideas Lesson Description: Students will explore how to develop their topic sentences into full paragraphs by adding supporting details. They will engage in brainstorming activities to generate relevant details and practice organizing them logically.

Supporting Details Expansion

Overview

This 30-minute lesson is the third in a 5-lesson unit titled Paragraph Power: Summer Writing. It targets 3rd-grade students (ages 8-9), building foundational writing skills aligned with California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2). Students will learn to expand topic sentences into fully developed paragraphs by generating and organising supporting details logically. The lesson incorporates engaging brainstorming activities and a structured graphic organiser to deepen understanding of paragraph coherence.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Generate multiple relevant supporting details that clearly relate to a given topic sentence.
  • Organise these details logically to build a cohesive, focused paragraph.
  • Demonstrate understanding of paragraph structure by transforming a simple topic sentence into a fuller paragraph.

Standards Alignment

  • California Common Core ELA Standards:

    • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
    • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2.A: Introduce a topic clearly.
    • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2.B: Develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details.
    • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2.C: Use linking words and phrases to connect ideas within categories of information.
  • California Department of Education ELA Framework (2014):

    • Instruction should balance explicit teaching, guided practice, and independent application.
    • Emphasises graphic organisers and metacognitive strategies to support writing.

Materials Needed

  • Individual whiteboards or lined paper for brainstorming
  • Marker pens or pencils
  • A prepared example topic sentence on the board: “Summer is a great season.”
  • Graphic organiser worksheet: “Paragraph Builder” with spaces for topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence
  • Timer
  • Sticky notes or small cards for detail ideas

Lesson Sequence

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Activate prior knowledge: Ask students what a paragraph is and what it includes. Briefly review that paragraphs start with a topic sentence and are expanded by adding supporting details.
  • Connect to unit: Refer to previous lessons where they wrote topic sentences about summer. Today they will bring those sentences to life by adding details.
  • Write the example topic sentence “Summer is a great season.” on the board.

2. Brainstorming Supporting Details (8 minutes)

  • Think aloud modelling: Teacher demonstrates thinking aloud while brainstorming details that explain why summer is great. Examples might include: “I get to go swimming,” “There is no school,” “I eat ice cream,” etc.
  • Interactive brainstorm: Students then write 3-5 supporting details related to the example sentence on their whiteboards or paper.
  • Using sticky notes/cards, students can create individual detail “cards” to facilitate reordering in the next step.
  • Teacher circulates to support and guide as needed.

3. Organising Details (10 minutes)

  • Group activity: In small groups (pairs or groups of three), students share their detail cards and work together to organise them in a logical order—e.g., by cause-effect, sequence, or category.
  • Teacher introduces simple transitions/linking phrases to connect ideas such as “First,” “Also,” “Finally.”
  • Each group writes the combined paragraph on chart paper with the topic sentence, supporting details with linking words, and a closing sentence.

4. Share and Reflect (5 minutes)

  • Groups present their paragraphs aloud to the class.
  • Teacher highlights effective use of supporting details and logical order.
  • Reflect as a class: How do the supporting details make the paragraph stronger? How does organisation help the reader?

5. Wrap-Up and Homework Connection (2 minutes)

  • Assign students to find a topic sentence about their favourite summer activity at home and write 3 supporting details for it for the next lesson.
  • Briefly preview that in lesson 4, they will practice adding descriptive details to make paragraphs even more vivid.

Differentiation Strategies

  • For ELLs or students needing support: Provide sentence starters and word banks with linking phrases and vocabulary related to summer. Use visuals or realia (e.g., picture cards of summer activities).
  • For advanced learners: Challenge them to write a concluding sentence for their paragraphs and to use more complex transitions or descriptive language.

Assessment

  • Informal formative assessment through observing brainstorming participation and group organising activity.
  • Review completed group paragraphs for inclusion of topic sentence, supporting details, and logical sequencing.
  • Exit Ticket (optional): Students write a single paragraph at desk, expanding a topic sentence with 3 supporting details individually.

Teacher Reflection Questions

  • Were students able to generate relevant and varied supporting details?
  • Did the graphic organiser effectively support organising ideas?
  • What evidence was there of understanding paragraph structure and coherence?
  • What scaffolding helped the most and what might be adjusted for next lessons?

By embedding active collaboration, concrete graphic organisers, and clear, CA-aligned standards, this lesson fosters all students’ writing confidence and skills in paragraph development, setting the stage for rich, detailed writing throughout the unit.
