Lesson Timeline

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Greet class and briefly review previous lessons about citizenship, focusing on the unit’s theme of evolving citizenship concepts.
  • Show a slide with the lesson question: "How does technology, especially social media, impact how we participate as citizens today?"
  • Introduce key vocabulary terms: citizenship, civic engagement, social media, digital responsibility.

2. Interactive Class Discussion (15 minutes)

  • Split class into 3 groups, 3 students each (reflecting the small class size of 9) to ensure rich discussion.
  • Each group receives a worksheet with prompts:
    • How do you use social media or technology to learn about community and government?
    • Can social media encourage people to get involved in community issues? How?
    • Are there risks or negative effects? What could they be?
  • Each group appoints a note-taker and spokesperson.
  • After 10 minutes of discussion, each group shares 2 key insights with the class.

3. Digital Poster Creation (20 minutes)

  • Students individually create a digital poster that summarises the impact of technology on citizenship from their discussion.
  • Encourage creative expression—use of images, keywords, examples, and digital tools to present arguments visually.
  • Emphasise clear communication and a balance of positive & negative impacts.
  • Teacher circulates supporting technical and content questions.

4. Gallery Walk and Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Display posters on the interactive whiteboard or monitors.
  • Students walk around (or if digital, quickly review each other's screens) to view peers’ posters.
  • Prompt reflection: "What new ideas did you see? How has your thinking about technology and citizenship changed?"
  • Optionally, collect posters for sharing in the following lesson.

Differentiation

  • For students needing additional support: provide vocabulary cards and sentence starters; pair with a peer for poster work.
  • For advanced learners: assign research on current events where social media played a pivotal role in civic movements.
  • Use frequent checks for understanding and formative feedback during discussion and creation phases.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observe group discussions for participation and understanding.
  • Summative: Evaluate digital posters using a rubric focused on content accuracy, critical thinking, creativity, and use of digital tools.

Extension Activity (Optional)

  • Invite students to create a short video or podcast reflecting on their posters, further practising their digital citizenship skills.

Teacher Tips

  • Use open-ended questions to spark thoughtful responses.
  • Model respectful discourse norms for discussing sensitive or controversial topics.
  • Leverage the lesson as a springboard for discussions about digital footprints and online ethics in coming sessions.

This lesson frame combines civic education with digital literacy, fostering responsible, engaged digital citizens according to California’s forward-facing curriculum goals. It invites inquiry, collaboration, and creativity—key components to empower 21st-century learners.
