Solving Two-Step Equations Together
Grade 5 Mathematics Learning to solve algebraic equations step by step
Learning Goal
I can solve two-step equations using inverse operations I can identify the correct order of operations to undo I can check my answer by substituting back into the original equation
What is a Two-Step Equation?
An equation that needs TWO operations to solve Example: 2x + 3 = 11 We need to undo addition AND multiplication Think of it like unwrapping a present - two layers!
The Magic of Inverse Operations
Addition ↔ Subtraction (opposites) Multiplication ↔ Division (opposites) Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other Keep the equation balanced like a seesaw!
Guided Example 1: Let's Solve Together!
Equation: 3x + 4 = 19 Step 1: Subtract 4 from both sides 3x + 4 - 4 = 19 - 4 3x = 15 Step 2: Divide both sides by 3 x = 5
Guided Example 2: Your Turn to Help!
Equation: 2x - 6 = 8 What should we undo first? Step 1: Add 6 to both sides 2x - 6 + 6 = 8 + 6 2x = 14 Step 2: Divide both sides by 2 x = 7
Guided Example 3: We're Getting Good at This!
Equation: 4x + 5 = 21 Let's solve it together step by step Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides 4x = 16 Step 2: Divide both sides by 4 x = 4
Remember Our Strategy
"First undo addition or subtraction, then undo multiplication or division. Always keep both sides balanced!"
Practice Time: Can You Solve These?
Work with your table partner Try these three equations: 1) 5x + 3 = 18 2) 2x - 4 = 10 3) 6x + 2 = 20 Remember to check your answers!
Let's Check Our Practice Answers
Problem 1: 5x + 3 = 18 → x = 3 Check: 5(3) + 3 = 15 + 3 = 18 ✓ Problem 2: 2x - 4 = 10 → x = 7 Check: 2(7) - 4 = 14 - 4 = 10 ✓ Problem 3: 6x + 2 = 20 → x = 3 Check: 6(3) + 2 = 18 + 2 = 20 ✓
Success Criteria Check
✓ I can solve two-step equations using inverse operations ✓ I can identify the correct order of operations to undo ✓ I can check my answer by substituting back You did amazing work today!
