📖 Background Reading: The Story of Birthday Candles
Have you ever wondered why we put candles on a birthday cake and blow them out? This tradition is much older than you might think!
The story begins in Ancient Greece (around 500 BCE). People baked round cakes to honour Artemis, the goddess of the moon. They placed lit candles on the cake to make it glow like the moon. They believed the smoke from the candles carried their prayers up to the gods.
Later, in 18th-century Germany (the 1700s), a celebration called Kinderfeste became popular. Families placed one candle on a cake for each year of a child's life, plus one extra candle to represent the hope of living another year. Children were encouraged to blow out all the candles in one breath — a tradition we still follow today!
By the 19th century (the 1800s), birthday candles and cakes spread across Europe and North America, including Canada. As candles became easier and cheaper to make, the tradition grew.
Today, birthday candles are used around the world. In China, noodles (representing long life) are often served alongside a birthday cake with candles. In Mexico, the piñata is a key part of celebrations, but candles on cakes are also common. In Canada, birthday cakes with candles are a beloved tradition at parties across all cultures.
The simple birthday candle has travelled thousands of years and across many cultures — all to help us celebrate you!
