🎯 My Learning Goal

I can... identify and classify different types of fractions, including proper, improper, mixed numbers, equivalent, and decimal fractions.

✅ Success Criteria — I know I've got it when I can:

Name the numerator and denominator in a fraction

Tell the difference between a proper and improper fraction

Convert an improper fraction to a mixed number

  Identify equivalent fractions

Match a fraction to its decimal form

📖 What Is a Fraction? (Read this first!)

A fraction shows a part of a whole. Think of a pizza cut into equal slices. If you eat 3 out of 8 slices, you ate 3/8 of the pizza.

Every fraction has two parts:

🔼 Numerator — the number on top → how many parts you have

🔽 Denominator — the number on the bottom → how many equal parts in total

💡 Memory tip: "D" for Denominator = "D" for Down!

📋 Types of Fractions — Quick Reference

Proper Fraction: Numerator is SMALLER than denominator → Example: 3/4 (less than 1 whole)

Improper Fraction: Numerator is BIGGER than or EQUAL to denominator → Example: 7/4 (more than 1 whole)

Mixed Number: A whole number AND a fraction together → Example: 1 3/4

Equivalent Fractions: Different fractions that are EQUAL in value → Example: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8

Decimal Fraction: A fraction written with a decimal point → Example: 1/2 = 0.5

🖐️ Tactile Tip: Ask your support teacher for fraction tiles or a fraction circle kit to hold and compare the pieces as you work through this sheet!

           3

           —     The 3 is the: _______________________

           5       The 5 is the: _______________________

7.   Convert this improper fraction to a mixed number. Show your work below.

11/3 = ___________

8.   Fill in the missing number to make these fractions equivalent.

2/5 = ____/10

💡 Hint: What did you multiply 5 by to get 10? Do the same to the top!

9.   Write the decimal fraction for each of the following.

1/2 = ___________      1/4 = ___________      3/4 = ___________

10.   In your own words, explain the difference between a proper fraction and an improper fraction. Use an example for each.

🖍️ Visual Activity (Bonus — Try It!)

11.   In the box below, draw a rectangle and shade 3/5 of it. Label the shaded part with the fraction.

🌟 Differentiation & Support Notes

💚 If you need extra support:

• Use fraction tiles or cut paper strips into equal pieces to compare fractions hands-on.

• Refer back to the "Quick Reference" guide at the top of this sheet anytime.

• For Question 7, try drawing circles and shading to visualise the improper fraction first.

• Ask your support teacher to read questions aloud if needed.

💙 If you finish early — Extension Challenge:

• Can you find three equivalent fractions for 3/4?

    3/4 = _______ = _______ = _______

• Convert 23/6 to a mixed number, then write it as a decimal (rounded to 2 decimal places).

Real-life challenge: You and a friend share a $12.00 pizza. You eat 3/8 of it. How much of the pizza (in dollars) did you eat? Show your work.

🧠 Focus Check-In

Before you hand this in, check off what you completed:

I read the definitions at the top

  I completed Part 1 (Questions 1–5)

  I completed Part 2 (Questions 6–10)

I tried the drawing activity (Question 11)

I checked my work before finishing

Great work today! Every fraction you practise brings you one step closer to mastering this skill. 💪
