Introduction (2 minutes)

Activity Setup (3 minutes)

• Forming Groups: Divide the class into six groups of four students each.
• Distributing Materials: Hand each group a deck of cards.

Main Activity: Card Addition Relay (8 minutes)

• Rules Explanation:

  1. Shuffle the cards and place the deck face down in the middle of the group.
  2. On 'go', the first student draws two cards, adds the numbers quickly, and says the sum aloud.
  3. The student places the cards at the bottom of the deck and passes the deck to the next student.
  4. Continue until each student has had three turns.
  5. The goal is to complete the rounds as accurately and swiftly as possible.

• Variations:

  • Face cards are worth: Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13, Ace = 1.
  • Include the jokers as wild cards which can represent any number from 1 to 13.

• Execution:

  • Start the stopwatch as the first group begins, and stop it once all groups have finished. Monitor the groups for accuracy and speed.

Conclusion and Reflection (2 minutes)

• Discussion: Ask students what strategies they used to add numbers quickly. Discuss any difficulties encountered and how they overcame them.
• Feedback: Provide feedback on their performance and encouragement to continue practising their addition skills.

Assessment:

Monitor the accuracy of the sums during the relay. Give instant corrective feedback as necessary. Observe student engagement and participation to assess their learning and enthusiasm for the subject.

Extensions and Adaptations:

• For advanced students, introduce triple card draws to challenge them with three-number addition.
• For students needing additional support, use number cards up to 9 only for simpler sums.
