Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 8 of 8 in the unit "Holistic Health Journey". Lesson Title: Creating a Personal Health Plan: Integrating Learning Lesson Description: In the final lesson, students will create a personal health plan that incorporates elements of Hauora, emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and stress management. They will reflect on their learning journey and set goals for their wellbeing.

Personal Wellbeing Goals

Lesson Overview

Unit: Holistic Health Journey (Lesson 8 of 8)
Subject: Health
Year Level: Year 9
Duration: 45 minutes
Curriculum Area: Health and Physical Education – Mental Health, Hauora, and Wellbeing
Curriculum Level: Level 4–5
Big Ideas:

  • Hauora is a holistic and interconnected concept.
  • Wellbeing includes emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and self-management strategies.
  • Personal reflection helps to set realistic and meaningful health goals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Create a Personal Health Plan that integrates the four dimensions of Hauora (Taha Tinana, Taha Wairua, Taha Hinengaro, Taha Whānau).
  2. Identify practical strategies for maintaining emotional wellbeing, building healthy relationships, and managing stress.
  3. Set three specific and achievable health goals for their wellbeing journey.
  4. Reflect on their learning throughout the unit and how it applies to their everyday life.

Lesson Structure

1. Whakawhanaungatanga (Connection & Review) – 5 minutes

  • Teacher-led discussion: “What have been the biggest takeaways from this unit on Hauora and holistic wellbeing?”
  • Pair-share: Students turn to a partner and share one lesson that resonated with them.
  • Group brainstorm (whiteboard or digital tool): What areas of Hauora do we need to maintain just like we would a car or device? (E.g., regular mental check-ins like ‘charging a phone’ for Taha Hinengaro).

2. The ‘Future Me’ Exercise – 10 minutes

  • Activity: Students will close their eyes for a guided visualisation (teacher-led):
    • “Imagine yourself one year from now… How do you feel physically? Emotionally? Socially? What routines have you kept up? What helps you stay balanced?”
  • Pair-share: What did your ‘Future You’ look like? Any surprises?
  • Class discussion: What stops people from achieving their wellbeing goals? (Barriers to success)

3. Personal Health Plan Workshop – 15 minutes

Students will create a Personal Health Plan using the Hauora framework.

  • Template Provided: Students receive a four-section Personal Health Plan worksheet or create their own using their workbooks.
  • Each section must include:
    1. Taha Tinana (Physical Wellbeing) – E.g., "I will do a 10-minute walk after school 3x per week."
    2. Taha Hinengaro (Mental & Emotional Wellbeing) – E.g., "I will practise deep breathing for 3 minutes before bed."
    3. Taha Whānau (Social Wellbeing) – E.g., "I will check in with a friend or family member every weekend."
    4. Taha Wairua (Spiritual Wellbeing) – E.g., "I will spend time in nature once a week to reflect and recharge."
  • Students must set three S.M.A.R.T goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound).
  • Check-in: Teacher walks around, supporting students in setting meaningful goals.

4. ‘Support System Circle’ – 7 minutes

  • Small group discussion (3–4 students per group):
    • Where do you turn when you face challenges in your wellbeing?
    • Who in your life can support you in meeting these goals?
  • Activity: On an A4 sheet, students draw a Support System Circle and list trusted people who will help them stay on track with their health plan (whānau, friends, teachers, coaches).

5. Closing Reflection – 8 minutes

  • Quick ‘Sticky Note Reflection’ Activity:
    • On a blue sticky note → "One thing I’m excited about in my health plan."
    • On a green sticky note → "One challenge I foresee & how I’ll manage it."
  • Students stick their notes on the board/wall under ‘Excited’ and ‘Challenges’ sections.
  • Final Karakia or whakataukī (teacher-led): "He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora" – "A healthy heart, a fulfilling life.”
  • Homework: Share your plan with one trusted person at home for accountability.

Assessment & Extension

  • Self-Assessment: Students rate their confidence in their Personal Health Plan (1–5 scale).
  • Teacher Feedback: Quick check-in with 2–3 students who may need additional support.
  • Extension Task: Create a vision board (digital or physical) representing their ideal wellbeing goals.

Teacher Notes

  • This lesson requires sensitivity to personal experiences. Keep discussions respectful and allow students to opt out of sharing personal information.
  • Some students may require alternative ways to engage, such as drawings or private reflections instead of verbal sharing.

Why This Lesson Works

Culturally Responsive: Grounded in Hauora and allows students to bring their cultural views on health into their Personal Health Plan.
Active & Engaging: Variety of visualisation, hands-on activities, discussion, and reflection keeps students motivated.
Ownership Over Wellbeing: By setting realistic, student-driven goals, learners see the connection between classroom lessons and real life.

📢 Final Words for Teachers:
This isn’t just a lesson—it’s a meaningful step for students to take ownership of their hauora long after this unit ends. Let’s empower them to live more holistically, one choice at a time! 🎉
