Overview

In lesson 6 of 24, students investigate Auckland’s physical environment and why it matters to people. They build on previous learning about Auckland as a growing city by analysing maps, photographs and an infographic, then explain one relationship between the environment and human activity.

Lesson structure (70 minutes)

  1. 0–8 min · Visual hook and prior knowledge. Open with the Auckland visual hook and lesson focus showing a striking aerial image combining harbour, volcanic cones, streams and built-up areas. Ask: “How might this environment shape where people live, work and travel?” Students complete a think-pair-share, then locate one familiar Auckland feature on the image or a classroom map.

  2. 8–20 min · Explicit teaching: reading geographical visuals. Use the annotated map, photographs and infographic examples to model how to read a title, legend, symbols, scale, labels, colours and data trends. Introduce and display the terms volcanic cones, isthmus, coastline, harbour, estuary, catchment, rainfall, and temperate climate. Encourage precise geographical vocabulary and an appropriate linking word such as because, therefore, however or as a result. Students may use the displayed word bank and orally rehearse before writing. Advanced learners explain how Auckland’s geography creates both a sustainability opportunity and a risk, for example protecting waterways while managing flood hazards.

  6. 64–70 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the plenary and success-criteria slide. Students self-assess against the criteria, then share one new geographical term and one relationship they understand. Finish with the success-criteria exit ticket slips; students identify the criterion they met most strongly and write one evidence-based sentence about Auckland’s natural environment.
