Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook: Where would you survive? Open with the beach habitat hook slides. Show four contrasting habitat images: a rock pool, sand dune, sandy beach and rocky shore. Ask: “Where would a crab, sand-hopper, wētā or seaweed be most likely to survive? Why?” Accept initial ideas without correcting them.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Teach the five needs Use the five habitat needs slides to introduce food, water, shelter, space and suitable conditions such as temperature, light, salinity and wave exposure. Explain that a habitat is the place where an organism lives and gets what it needs. Use gestures and simple examples: “A crab needs food, water, a space to live and shelter from predators.”

  3. 12–16 minutes – Model a match Display a coastal organism and habitat example from the worked matching example. Think aloud: “A rock pool can provide water, small spaces for shelter, food and suitable conditions for a shore crab.” Model using the sentence frame: “The ___ needs ___, and the ___ habitat provides it because ___.” Check understanding with thumbs up, sideways or down.

  4. 16–31 minutes – Needs-matching investigation Place students in mixed-ability pairs.
