Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 4 of 9 in the unit "Building Resilience Through Values". Lesson Title: Mindfulness Practices Lesson Description: Introduce mindfulness techniques to manage stress. Students will participate in guided meditation to foster self-awareness and emotional regulation.

Overview

This is lesson 4 of 9 in “Building Resilience Through Values.” Today students learn and practise simple mindfulness techniques to notice stress signals, regulate emotions, and choose helpful self-care strategies. This builds on earlier learning about resilience and self-care routines.

Learning intentions

  • WALT (We Are Learning To…) identify body and emotion clues that show stress is building.
  • WALT practise mindfulness strategies to help manage stress reactions.
  • WALT use respectful self-talk and problem-solving steps when thoughts feel overwhelming.
  • WALT describe how seeking support can help resilience when stress becomes too big.

Success criteria

  • I can name at least two stress signals in my body or feelings.
  • I can follow a guided mindfulness practice safely and respectfully.
  • I can explain how mindfulness helps my nervous system calm down.
  • I can share one “next step” strategy I can use when I feel stressed.

Curriculum links

  • Te Mātaiaho Health and PE — Self-care: strategies like healthy routines, problem-solving, and seeking support can help manage emotional challenges.
  • Te Mātaiaho Health and PE — Self-care: exploring positive self-talk to reframe negative thoughts and respond constructively.
  • Te Mātaiaho Health and PE — Self-care: practising self-care strategies such as rest, hydration, and relaxation techniques to manage emotional and physical discomfort.
  • Te Mātaiaho Health and PE — Self-care: recognising that the nervous system responds to stress and that regulation strategies support resilience.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Settle and connections. Teacher greets students and briefly recaps lesson 3: “Resilience = noticing stress early and using tools.” Students do a quick “thumb check” (silent) for how calm they feel today.

  2. 5–12 min · Stress signals mini-introduction. Teacher shows a simple three-column chart: “Body clues / Feelings / Thoughts” and gives examples suitable for Year 6 (e.g., tummy tight, heartbeat fast, worry, “I can’t do this”). Students choose one example card (teacher provides) and place it under the correct heading on their worksheet: one body clue and one feeling clue.

  3. 12–25 min · Guided mindfulness practice (safe and inclusive). Teacher introduces the purpose: “Mindfulness helps you notice what’s happening without immediately reacting.”

  • Teacher sets expectations: students can close eyes or keep a soft gaze; they can practise quietly; they may stop and choose a “grounding” action (look at the room, hold feet flat).
  • Teacher leads a short guided breathing/grounding practice (about 6–8 minutes) using a calm script: notice breath in/out, count 1–5 slowly, then shift attention to body sensations (hands, shoulders), and end with one gentle stretch. Students follow along and practise their chosen eye position; then they complete a “How I felt during practice” reflection: “My body felt… My mind noticed…”
  1. 25–33 min · Share and connect: what happened and why. Teacher facilitates a respectful discussion using prompts: “What did you notice first—body, feelings, or thoughts?” and “Did anything change in your stress level?” Students share in pairs, then record one sentence as a class contribution: “Mindfulness helps me because…”

  2. 33–40 min · Build a personal mindfulness plan. Teacher gives a 3-step template for students to complete:

  • Step 1: “When I notice stress, I will…” (choose a body clue)
  • Step 2: “I will use…” (breathing/counting/grounding)
  • Step 3: “If it’s still too big, I will…” (seek support: teacher, trusted adult, friend, school counsellor pathway as appropriate) Students fill in their plan and draw a small “trigger-to-tool” symbol.
  1. 40–45 min · Exit ticket and closure. Teacher collects quick responses: students write answers to two prompts on a slip:
  • “One stress signal I noticed is…”
  • “One mindfulness strategy I will use again is…” Students then do a final calm thumb check to compare with the start of class.

Resources

  • Guided mindfulness script (teacher copy) and a timer
  • Student worksheet: “Body / Feelings / Thoughts” and reflection boxes
  • Stress-signal example cards (optional)
  • Personal mindfulness plan template
  • Calming corner items (optional): soft object, stress ball, small mat or seat cushion
  • Quiet instructions display (visual expectations)
  • Exit ticket slips and pens/pencils

Assessment

  • Observation checklist during guided mindfulness: follows safely, participates respectfully, can describe what was noticed.
  • Worksheet review: correct identification of at least one body clue and one feeling clue.
  • Exit ticket: students can state a stress signal and one mindfulness strategy they will use again.

Differentiation

  • Provide sentence starters for reflection and plan sections (e.g., “My body felt…”, “My mind noticed…”).
  • Offer choice of mindfulness style: breathing/counting or grounding (touch hands, feel feet) to support different regulation needs.
  • For students who find closed-eye practices difficult, allow a “soft gaze” option and encourage focus on a neutral point in the room.
  • Extension for students ready to deepen: add an example of positive self-talk they could use after mindfulness (e.g., “I can calm down one step at a time.”)

Extension (optional)

  • N/A (not requested).
