Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min – Pollution-source challenge Display a local awa or harbour image and ask: “How could something used at home or on a road end up here?” Open with the hook and local waterway image. In pairs, students list three possible pollution sources, then share one idea. Introduce the WALT and success criteria.

  2. 5–12 min – What does ‘up the pipe’ mean? Explain that wastewater and stormwater are different: wastewater travels through pipes to a treatment plant, while rain can wash pollutants directly from roads and land into streams. Show the simplified treatment diagram in the ‘up the pipe’ explanation and treatment diagram. Students identify one purpose of treatment, such as removing solids, harmful microbes or excess nutrients, before water is released.

  3. 12–22 min – Pollutant pathway simulation Arrange groups of six. Give each group a starting place—home, road, farm, workshop or school—and a pollutant scenario from the pollutant pathway and investigation sheet. Students use arrows, labels and short notes to trace the pollutant’s movement: source → drain or runoff → stream/awa → living things. Pause halfway for groups to explain their pathway to another group. Emphasise that “out of sight” does not mean “gone”.

  4. 22–35 min – Community decision-making hui Assign each group a role: council, whānau, farm, industry, or community/environment group. Give the group a local water-quality problem, such as litter and oil entering a stormwater drain, excess nutrients from land, or unsafe wastewater overflow. Groups use the evidence on the stakeholder problem and action-planning section to agree on two actions and one possible trade-off. Encourage discussion stems: “Our evidence suggests…”, “This could affect…”, “A fair solution might…”, and “We need more evidence about…”.

  5. 35–41 min – Council meeting and justification Each group gives a 45-second recommendation. They must name the problem, explain one effect on waterways or living things, and justify one action that protects water as taonga. The class listens for solutions that are effective, practical and fair to people and the environment. Record strong evidence-based actions on the council-meeting prompt and action summary.

  6. 41–45 min – Individual reflection and next step Students complete the final section of the individual reflection and exit response: “One way pollution can reach an awa is…”, “Sewage treatment is important because…”, and “Our community should… because…”. Preview Lesson 6: designing a shared water-protection message or action plan.
