Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min — Hook and prior knowledge Display a before-and-after image of a clean beach and a littered or damaged beach using the opening beach comparison. Ask: “What has changed, and who or what might be affected?” Students think, pair and share. Explain that today they will investigate human impacts, not blame individuals.

  2. 5–12 min — Build vocabulary and understanding Use the vocabulary and teaching slides to introduce ecosystem, impact, pollution, litter, trampling, development and introduced species. Show a photo and model a simple chain: “Litter on the beach → a bird eats plastic → the bird becomes sick.” Read concise captions aloud; provide the glossary with symbols on the photo-led impact investigation sheet. Check understanding with quick gestures or thumbs up/down.

  3. 12–20 min — Collaborative action sort Organise 29 students into mixed groups of four or five. Give each group local community scenario cards from the local community scenario cards and ask them to sort actions into helpful, harmful or “it depends”. Examples may include removing litter, walking on dunes, planting native species, building near the shore and releasing unwanted animals. Groups must justify one decision using “I think this because…”. Circulate and question: “What could happen next?”

  4. 20–28 min — Photograph investigation In pairs, students examine the photo examples on the photo-led impact investigation sheet and discuss: What do you notice? What human action is shown? Which coastal life could be affected? What evidence supports your idea? Invite several pairs to share. Accept spoken, drawn or scribed responses.

  5. 28–39 min — Cause-and-effect chain Model the structure on the cause-and-effect model and instructions: human action → immediate change → effect on coastal life → possible helpful response. Students choose one impact and complete the chain on the cause-and-effect chain page. Encourage specific examples, such as “Trampling dune plants → fewer plants hold the sand → wind blows more sand away → use marked paths.” Adults or peers can scribe ideas where needed.

  6. 39–43 min — Share and improve Pairs share their chains with another pair, using the prompt on the peer-check slide: “The action is… The effect is… My evidence is…” Partners identify one clear link and suggest one improvement. Select two or three examples to discuss with the class.

  7. 43–45 min — Plenary and check Return to the opening images using the final reflection slide. Students complete the final sentence on the reflection prompt: “One human action that can affect coastal life is… because…” Collect sheets and address any misconception before the next lesson.
