Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and purpose. Teacher displays the question, “What is our class’s favourite way to spend free time?” using the opening survey question slide, and discusses why everyone should have a safe way to respond, including choosing “prefer not to say”. Students think privately, then suggest what would make the survey fair and respectful.

  2. 7–15 min · Model fair data collection. Teacher uses the fair-survey teaching slides to model one question, one response per person, voluntary participation and private response options; explain that names are not recorded. Students compare a fair survey with an unfair example, such as asking only the teacher’s friends, and identify one difference.

  3. 15–25 min · Choose categories and predict. Teacher introduces the categories reading, sport, art, music and other, explaining that categories must not overlap: each response belongs in one category only.   5. 40–52 min · Tally, total and interpret.
