Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 19 of 20 in the unit "CAGED Guitar Mastery". Lesson Title: Creating Your Own Solos Lesson Description: Encourage students to compose their own solos using the CAGED system and improvisation techniques.

Crafting Expressive Solos

Lesson Overview

Unit: CAGED Guitar Mastery
Lesson Number: 19 of 20
Curriculum Level: NCEA Level 3 (Curriculum Level 8)
Achievement Objective: Develop and apply an understanding of musical improvisation and composition using the CAGED system.
Big Idea: Music is an expression of, and a way of connecting with, culture, identity, place, and time (NZ Music Curriculum).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, the student will:

  1. Compose a short guitar solo using the CAGED system.
  2. Apply phrasing, articulation, and dynamics for expressive effect.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to improvise creatively using knowledge of scale positions.
  4. Reflect on their solo and make refinements based on their musical goals.

Resources Needed

  • Guitar (electric or acoustic)
  • Amplifier (if applicable)
  • Backing track in a chosen key (A minor or C major recommended)
  • Loop pedal (if available)
  • Manuscript paper or Guitar TAB notebook
  • Metronome
  • Whiteboard and markers (for theory notes)

Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction – Purpose of Soloing (5 min)

  • Discuss why solos are important in music (e.g. personal expression, storytelling, technical mastery).
  • Listen to a short example of an iconic solo (e.g. Carlos Santana, Tommy Emmanuel, or Kora) and analyse:
    • How does the guitarist use phrasing?
    • What techniques make the solo memorable?

2. Warm-Up – Revisiting CAGED (5 min)

  • Student plays through the five CAGED scale positions in a familiar key (e.g. A minor).
  • Teacher demonstrates how to connect positions smoothly across the fretboard.
  • Quick call-and-response exercise: Teacher plays a short melodic phrase in one position, and the student replicates it in a different CAGED position.

3. Creative Exploration – Building a Solo (10 min)

  • Step 1: Choosing a Motif
    • The student selects or creates a simple three- to five-note phrase as the foundation of their solo.
  • Step 2: Expanding the Idea
    • Experiment with different positions on the fretboard (using CAGED shapes).
    • Utilise slides, bends, vibrato, and hammer-ons to enhance expression.
  • Step 3: Rhythmic Variation
    • The student plays their motif with different rhythmic emphases—short staccato notes vs. sustained legato notes.
  • Step 4: Backing Track Integration
    • The student plays their solo over a looped chord progression or teacher-provided backing track.
    • Encourage experimentation with dynamics—starting softly and building intensity.

4. Refining & Reflecting (7 min)

  • Student plays their developed solo from start to finish.
  • Teacher provides specific constructive feedback on phrasing and articulation.
  • Student records their solo (phone or computer) and listens back for self-evaluation:
    • “What do I like about my solo?”
    • “What could I adjust for more impact?”
  • Student makes one adjustment live to improve phrasing, fluidity, or creativity.

Assessment & Next Steps

  • Formative Assessment: Student’s ability to create a coherent solo using position shifts and expressive techniques.
  • Final Unit Preparation (Lesson 20 Preview): Student will perform an extended solo composition, incorporating all techniques learned in the unit.
  • Reflect on what makes a memorable solo and start thinking about their own musical identity as a guitarist.

Teacher Reflection

For next class: Did the student engage well with improvisation? Do they need more support in transitions between CAGED positions before the final unit performance?

This lesson is designed to balance structure and creativity—helping students gain confidence in soloing while expressing their own musical ideas. 🎸🎶
