Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 5 of 6 in the unit "Shapes in Our World". Lesson Title: Creating Shape Art Lesson Description: Students will use cut-out shapes to create a piece of art. They will learn to recognize how different shapes can combine to form new images, enhancing their creativity and understanding of shapes.

Creative Shape Art

Lesson Overview

Year Level: Foundation (Prep)
Subject: Mathematics
Unit: Shapes in Our World (Lesson 5 of 6)
Lesson Duration: 30 minutes
Class Size: 14 students
Curriculum Area: Australian Curriculum – Mathematics
Content Descriptor:

  • ACMMG009 – Sort, describe and name familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects in the environment.

Learning Intentions

By the end of this lesson, students will:
✅ Recognise and name basic 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, etc.).
✅ Experiment with arranging shapes to create new images.
✅ Use creativity to produce an artwork from shape cut-outs.

Success Criteria

Students will demonstrate their learning by:
⭐ Naming at least three shapes used in their artwork.
⭐ Explaining how different shapes combine to make a picture.
⭐ Constructing an artwork using at least four different shapes.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction – Shape Hunt (5 minutes)

  • Gather students on the mat and remind them of the shapes they have learned in previous lessons.
  • Engage in a quick Shape Hunt:
    • Ask students to look around the classroom and point out objects that match the shapes they have been learning.
    • Example: "Who can find something shaped like a circle? A rectangle?"
  • Hold up different shape cut-outs and ask:
    • "What shape is this?"
    • "Can we find something in our classroom that looks like this?"

2. Main Activity – Shape Art Creation (15 minutes)

Instructions:

  1. Each student receives a set of pre-cut 2D shapes (circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals).
  2. Show an example of a simple artwork made from shapes (e.g., a house from squares and triangles).
  3. Encourage students to create their own picture using only the given shapes.
  4. Provide glue sticks, coloured paper, and crayons for decorating their shape creation.
  5. As students work, circulate the room and ask open-ended questions:
    • "What happens when you put two triangles together?"
    • "How did you decide which shapes to use for your picture?"
    • "What does your artwork look like? Can you name the shapes you used?"

3. Reflection – Shape Gallery Walk (10 minutes)

  • Once students finish their art, gather them for a Gallery Walk.
  • Each student places their artwork on a display board or table.
  • Walk around as a group and ask students to:
    • Point to a friend's artwork and name shapes they see.
    • Share what they created and which shapes they used.
  • Reinforce the idea that shapes are everywhere and can be used in creative ways.

Resources & Materials

✔ Pre-cut paper shapes (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, etc.)
✔ Glue sticks
✔ Coloured paper
✔ Crayons or markers
✔ Example artwork for inspiration

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment Strategies

📌 Observation:

  • Monitor students’ ability to name and recognise shapes correctly.
  • Observe how they arrange shapes to form images.

📌 Verbal Reflection:

  • Listen to students describe their artwork using shape names.

📌 Student Work Samples:

  • Collect a few artworks to use as future learning examples.

Differentiation Strategies

🔹 Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide shape mats with outlines to guide placement.
  • Work with a small group to reinforce shape recognition.

🔹 Extension for Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to design a more detailed picture with additional shapes.
  • Introduce overlapping shapes and discuss new forms created.

Final Thoughts

This lesson blends mathematical reasoning with creativity, encouraging students to see shapes as building blocks for imaginative artwork. By actively engaging in a hands-on, visually stimulating activity, students strengthen their ability to identify, describe, and combine shapes in meaningful ways.

🌟 Next Lesson (Lesson 6 of 6): Students will take a nature walk to explore and identify real-world shapes outside the classroom!
