Teaching Instructions

I want the plan to focus on the assessment named; Demonstrate understanding of techniques selected for a feasible Materials and Processing outcome. These students will need for the title to be broken down and meanings given for the different parts so that they understand what it is they need to be researching/thinking about. Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  2. 5–15 min · Unpack the title. Students ask clarifying questions and identify any term they previously misunderstood.

  3. 15–25 min · Annotate with examples. Teacher distributes the assessment-title annotation and question-planning worksheet and completes the first row as a think-aloud, using a plywood phone stand as an example: material—plywood; technique—measuring, sawing, drilling, and sanding; selection reason—accurate and achievable with available workshop tools. Students complete the remaining annotations, adding a plain-language definition and a Materials and Processing example for each key term. They may use a familiar outcome such as a storage box, stool, phone stand, planter, or simple mechanical device.

  4. 25–35 min · Build research questions. Teacher explains that strong questions should lead to useful investigation, not a yes/no answer, and models questions such as “Which joining technique would provide enough strength for a plywood phone stand, and why?” and “How could trialling two finishing techniques improve the outcome?” Students use their annotation to write three research questions about one feasible outcome. Questions should investigate the materials, techniques, reasons for selection, trialling, limitations, or feedback from users or people with relevant expertise.

  5. 35–43 min · Pair critique and improve. Teacher asks students to exchange worksheets and open the research-question check slides. Students use the exam command words reference mat to identify the action required by each question, then give feedback: one question that clearly focuses on techniques and one suggestion for greater specificity. Students revise at least one question so it names an outcome and asks how or why a technique is appropriate.

  6. 43–50 min · Assessment wording check and exit response. Teacher displays the checklist on the peer-check and plenary slides: does each question name or imply a feasible outcome, focus on a technique, invite evidence or reasoning, and support understanding rather than simple description? Students complete the final check on the worksheet, then submit one strongest research question and a sentence explaining which assessment term it addresses.
