Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Reconnect and hook Open with the beach resilience hook and recap slides. Show a before-and-after beach image and ask: “What might happen if nesting areas are disturbed, dunes are damaged or plastic reaches the sea?” Briefly revisit learning from the previous lessons about beach plants, animals and threats. Introduce the WALT and success criteria in student-friendly language.

  2. 5–10 minutes – Model the design process Use the problem-to-solution modelling slides to model one example, such as protecting a shorebird nesting area. Think aloud: identify the problem, propose an action, explain how it reduces harm, and name a limitation—for example, signs may be ignored or access may need to change. Emphasise that a strong solution is realistic, helpful and considerate of people as well as wildlife.

  3. 10–14 minutes – Explain teamwork and choices Establish respectful group roles: facilitator, resource manager, recorder or scribe, and presenter. Explain that roles can be shared and that every idea should be heard before the team decides. Give each team of four or five a design brief and distribute the beach resilience design brief and planning sheet. Class members listen for the four success criteria and give one specific strength or question. Use the presentation prompts and feedback slide to maintain focused, respectful responses.

  6. 39–45 minutes – Evaluate and reflect Return to the reflection and self-assessment section. Students complete: “Our solution reduces harm by…” and “One limitation is…”. Invite a few students to share. Summarise that resilience solutions often involve trade-offs and require cooperation, observation and ongoing improvement. Explain that lesson 5 will involve reviewing and improving the unit’s ideas.
