Teaching Instructions

Stand-alone Drama lesson (reliever-friendly) for Year 7–8, 75 minutes. Focus: voice, body, movement and space; apply devising skills from small scripts to create short group performance at desks. Students work in small groups or individually at desks.

Include:

  • Learning intention + success criteria (student-friendly)
  • Short warm-up that uses imagination/voice/body but keeps desks as base (no moving around required beyond personal space)
  • Main activity: “Desk Devising: Voice + Movement + Space”
    • Provide a simple performance task sheet content inside the lesson plan: prompt, requirements, group roles, time plan.
    • Task: create a 45–60 second micro-performance using 3 ‘beats’ (Freeze, Move, Speak) and using at least 2 levels of space (high/low) and 2 voice techniques (volume, pace, tone). Include one agreed sound effect (vocal only or body percussion).
    • Students rehearse using only desk-area movement (gestures, levels, paths within desk space—e.g., around chair) and voice.
  • Share/perform: groups perform to class using respectful audience protocol.
  • Reflection exit ticket: 2 stars + 1 goal OR “I noticed/I can improve”.

Resources/Setup suggestions: minimal props, use paper scripts, timer, rubric/checklist.

Class management: reliever script for instructions, transitions, how to handle late arrivals/behaviour.

Assessment: formative checklist aligned to success criteria (voice clarity, movement clarity, use of space, group collaboration, audience respect).

Add differentiation: support option with sentence starters/choice of prompts; extension with adding an emotional shift or varying dynamics.

Safety: movement stays within personal space; no standing on chairs.

Use NZ context language (e.g., “kōrero/feedback” optional) but keep it straightforward.

Overview

Today students practise voice, body, movement, and space using devising skills from small scripts to create a short group micro-performance. They stay seated/anchored at desks while still showing clear levels and pathways within personal space.

Learning intentions

  • WALT use voice techniques (volume, pace, tone) to show meaning in drama.
  • WALT use body movement and levels (high/low) to create clear movement choices.
  • WALT use space thoughtfully (near/far, high/low) to communicate a dramatic moment.
  • WALT collaborate to devise and rehearse a 45–60 second desk performance with 3 beats.

Success criteria

“I can …”

  • I can use at least 2 voice techniques clearly in my performance (volume, pace, tone).
  • I can show at least 2 levels (high/low) and movement that is readable from my desk position.
  • I can create a clear sound effect and use the 3 beats: Freeze, Move, Speak.
  • I can work respectfully with my group and follow audience protocol during performances.

Curriculum links

  • Drama (Te Mātaiaho English—Example drama texts): devising and interpreting dramatic moments with tension and meaning through character and action.
  • English (speaking and listening): use oral language purposefully for drama, adapting delivery to audience and purpose.
  • Communication and collaboration: contribute ideas, negotiate roles, and give/receive feedback to improve performances.

Lesson structure (75 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Settling + expectations (reliever script). Teacher greets students, states the lesson focus (voice/body/space at desks), and reminds them: desks are our “stage”, no standing on chairs, movement stays in personal space. Late arrivals enter quietly and join a group.

  2. 5–15 min · Warm-up: Desk Imagination Ladder. Teacher leads a call-and-response: students keep hands/feet near their desk area.

  • Students imagine a “thing” (e.g., chilly wind, surprise message) and use only face/upper body to show it.
  • Repeat with voice: add one sentence, then repeat with a different tone (e.g., serious, excited).
  • Add levels: students show a high shape (shoulders up/head high) and a low shape (head down/hinge slightly) while still seated.
  1. 15–20 min · Model the task: “Freeze → Move → Speak.” Teacher briefly demonstrates one micro-performance at one desk using:
  • Freeze (1 beat): still, clear shape and gaze.
  • Move (1 beat): gestures + path around chair (within desk footprint).
  • Speak (1 beat): one line delivered with a clear voice technique. Students observe for: readability, level change, and voice clarity.
  1. 20–35 min · Direct teaching + planning check-in. Teacher introduces the 3 beats and required elements:
  • 45–60 seconds total, 3 beats repeated in order once (Freeze, Move, Speak).
  • At least 2 levels (high/low) and at least 2 voice techniques (choose: volume, pace, tone).
  • One agreed sound effect (vocal only or body percussion). Students get their script prompt sheet (paper) and fill in a quick plan: which line, which voice techniques, what sound effect, and where high/low moments happen.
  1. 35–55 min · Main activity: Desk Devising: Voice + Movement + Space. Teacher circulates with a timer and a coaching script: “Show me your Freeze shape—can we read it? Now your Move path—does it stay within desk space? Finally Speak—what voice technique are you using?” Students rehearse at desks in groups of 3–5 or individually using only:
  • gestures, arm shapes, facial expression
  • levels (high/low)
  • desk-area paths around chair
  • vocal sound effect and spoken line They refine until each element meets the success criteria.
  1. 55–68 min · Share/perform with audience protocol. Teacher sets the protocol: performers, audience still and quiet; feedback only after applause; clap for respectful transitions. Groups perform to the class (about 1–1.5 minutes per group including changeover). Teacher uses the formative checklist during performances.

  2. 68–75 min · Reflection exit ticket. Students complete an exit ticket: “2 stars + 1 goal” OR “I noticed / I can improve.” Teacher collects and scans for common next steps (e.g., voice clarity, clearer levels, stronger collaboration).

Resources

  • Desk Devising Voice + Movement + Space (played throughout for instructions, timing, and prompts)
  • Desk Devising micro-performance task sheet (printed for each student/group)
  • Timer (visible to teacher)
  • Paper scripts (short prompt lines for micro-performance)
  • Formative checklist (teacher copy; class-facing criteria displayed on board)
  • Simple props optional: one small object per group (e.g., paper “phone”/“note” only if needed)

Assessment

  • Formative teacher checklist during performances: voice clarity, movement clarity, use of space (high/low + readable actions), group collaboration, audience respect.
  • Quick rehearsal check at 5–10 minutes into task: each group demonstrates one Freeze and one Speak with chosen voice technique.
  • Exit ticket (2 stars + 1 goal / noticed+improve) to identify the next focus for tomorrow/next task.

Differentiation

  • Support: provide sentence starters and a “prompt choice” on Desk Devising micro-performance task sheet (e.g., “I freeze because…”, “My tone changes when…”, “Our sound effect is…”). Allow students to pick one voice technique only, if needed, then add a second later.
  • Support scaffold: roles—Voice Captain (sound + delivery), Movement Captain (levels + path), Space Director (where to look/gaze + where freeze happens).
  • Extension: students add an emotional shift within the Speak beat (e.g., calm → urgent), and vary dynamics (quieter/louder or faster/slower) while keeping within desk space.
  • SEN/EAL: rehearse silently first (body-only), then layer in voice; permit scripted line reading initially with gradual improvement in tone and pace.

Desk Devising Task Sheet (include on Desk Devising micro-performance task sheet)

  • Prompt (choose one):
  1. “You receive a message, but it’s not what you expected.”
  2. “You find something in your desk that shouldn’t be there.”
  3. “You must convince a friend to try something brave.”
  • Requirements:

  • Total time: 45–60 seconds

  • 3 beats in order: Freeze → Move → Speak

  • Show at least 2 levels: high and low

  • Use at least 2 voice techniques: volume, pace, tone

  • Add one agreed sound effect (vocal only OR body percussion)

  • Movement stays within desk area: gestures + levels + path around chair only

  • Group roles (assign):

  • Voice Captain: chooses 2 voice techniques + leads the spoken line

  • Movement Captain: plans high/low shapes + the Move beat

  • Space Director: ensures gaze/audience readability and desk-area pathway

  • Sound Tech (if group size allows): leads sound effect timing

  • Time plan:

  • 5 min: plan beats and fill in voice + levels + sound effect

  • 10 min: rehearse Freeze only, then Move only, then Speak only

  • 10 min: full run-through; adjust for clarity

  • 5 min: final rehearsal and readiness check

  • Teacher reminder line: “If we can’t read it from our seats, make it bigger, clearer, slower—without leaving desk space.”
