Discovering the Northern Territory

Lesson Overview

Year Level: Year 1
Duration: 40 minutes
Unit: Exploring Australia's Wonders – Lesson 2 of 10
Australian Curriculum Links:

  • HASS (History & Geography) – Year 1
    • ACHASSK031: The natural, managed, and constructed features of places, their location, and how they change.
    • ACHASSK033: The connections of people in Australia to places and how these impact identity.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify key features of the Northern Territory (NT), including its climate, landscapes, and unique animals.
  2. Recognise the cultural significance of NT, including Indigenous communities and landmarks such as Uluru.
  3. Create a simple poster showcasing what makes the NT special.

Lesson Structure

1. Welcome & Engagement (5 minutes)

  • Warm-Up Question: "Has anyone heard of the Northern Territory before? What do you know about it?"
  • Briefly introduce NT using a large map of Australia. Ask students to locate NT by pointing to it.
  • Show three quick images: Uluru, Kakadu National Park, and a saltwater crocodile. Ask students to guess what they are.
  • Explain that today we will "travel" to NT and explore its wonders.

2. NT’s Unique Features (10 minutes)

(Whole-Class Discussion with Visuals)

  • Climate: "NT is very hot! It can be dry in some parts and very wet in others." Compare NT’s two seasons (Wet and Dry) to their own weather.
  • Animals: Show and describe animals like the saltwater crocodile, frilled-neck lizard, and the pink cockatoo.
  • Landscapes: Highlight Uluru and Kakadu National Park’s rivers, waterfalls, and rock formations.
  • Indigenous Culture: Introduce the concept of Traditional Owners, discussing the importance of Uluru to the Anangu people.

3. Interactive Activity (15 minutes)

(Creating an NT ‘Snapshot’ Poster)

  • Students will create a mini-poster about NT.
  • Provide a worksheet with an outline of NT.
  • They will:
    1. Draw: One animal, one landform, and one weather symbol.
    2. Write: A short sentence (teacher-assisted) about what they find interesting. Example: "Uluru is a big red rock!"
    3. Colour: Fill in their pictures with bright colours.

Teacher Role: Walk around, encourage discussion, ask questions like, "Which animal do you think lives near water?"

4. Reflection & Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Pair Share: Students pair up and explain their poster to a partner.
  • Class Sharing: Select 3-4 students to share their favourite NT fact.
  • Exit Question: "Would you like to visit NT? Why or why not?"

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Additional Support: Pre-drawn images for students needing extra assistance in writing/drawing.
  • Extension: Encourage advanced students to add extra details (e.g., Traditional Owner language names).
  • Sensory-Friendly: Use textures (e.g., red sand in a small container) for a hands-on element.

Assessment & Success Indicators

✅ Students correctly identify at least one key NT feature (land, animal, climate, or culture).
✅ Active participation in discussions and their pair share.
✅ A completed and visually engaging mini-poster with both drawings and simple sentences.

Resources & Materials

  • Large classroom map of Australia
  • Printed images of NT landscapes, animals, and Indigenous artworks
  • A3 paper for posters
  • Colouring pencils and markers
  • Pre-drawn NT worksheet with space for drawing and writing

Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson Notes)

What worked well?

  • Were students engaged in the visuals and discussions?
  • Did they confidently share ideas about NT?

What could be improved?

  • Did certain students need more guidance?
  • Could an additional hands-on activity help reinforce learning?

This lesson brings NT to life in an interactive, engaging, and meaningful way for Year 1 students. 🌏🎨👏
