Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and purpose. Teacher displays a simple class question, such as “How many siblings do we have?”, and opens the hook and learning intention slides; learners predict how a class’s answers might be organised so that patterns are easy to see.

  2. 5–15 min · Model a dot plot. Teacher writes the data set 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, draws a horizontal number line from 1 to 4, and models placing one mark above the matching number for each value using the worked dot plot sequence. Using the human dot plot instructions and discussion prompts, learners stand at the correct number, with repeated values forming vertical stacks. The class counts each frequency, identifies the most common value and physically shows the spread by standing at the smallest and largest values.

  5. 40–50 min · Counter-based practice. Teacher distributes the dot plot practice worksheet and provides counters or small cubes. Learners complete the Must Do data set 1, 2, 2, 3, placing counters above a number line; those ready continue to the Can Do and Try prompts. Teacher works with a focus group, repeatedly modelling “read the number, find the matching position, place one counter”.

  6. 50–57 min · Explain and compare.   7. 57–60 min · Exit check. Teacher returns to the plenary and exit question slide and asks learners to independently complete: “For the data 1, 2, 2, 3, the most common value is ___ and the spread is from ___ to ___.” Learners show their answer and briefly explain how they know.
