Teaching Instructions

I want a fun and engaging lesson that is interactive - games galore. Whakawhanaungatanga based. Prefereably created in slides. It is a Tutorial - so would prefer it not to be focused too much on math or english specifically. This is for Year 10 students

Year 10 New Zealand History (45 minutes)

Curriculum Alignment

  • Learning Area: Social Sciences — Aotearoa New Zealand histories
  • Curriculum Levels: Level 5 (Year 10)
  • Achievement Objectives:
    • Understand how historical events and processes since 1840 have shaped New Zealand society.
    • Engage with multiple perspectives, including Māori and Pākehā.
    • Develop skills in gathering and interpreting evidence, critical thinking, and communication.
  • Key Competencies (NZ Curriculum pages 12-13):
    • Relating to Others: Whakawhanaungatanga - building relationships through shared learning experiences.
    • Thinking: engaging critically and creatively with history topics.

  5. Reflect on the importance of history in understanding diverse identities in Aotearoa.

Lesson Structure

TimeActivityDescription
0-5 minWhakawhanaungatanga Icebreaker: Timeline ChatInteractive whole class: Each student places themselves on an imaginary timeline (classroom wall markers labelled 1800, 1840, 1900, Today). They share one fact or guess about NZ history, focusing on events around 1840. This builds relationships and activates prior knowledge. Teacher models an example.
5-10 minQuick Interactive History Quiz: Mihi Whānau EditionUsing slides, run a fast-paced quiz game where students buzz in or raise hands to answer questions about early European and Māori encounters, Treaty of Waitangi fundamentals, and key historical figures. Points earned contribute to team scores. This introduces key content in a fun way.
10-20 minCollaborative Role-Play Game: Treaty NegotiationStudents split into groups (Māori chiefs, British officials, settlers). Using simple role cards on slides, they discuss and negotiate aspects of the Treaty of Waitangi. Teacher facilitates highlighting different viewpoints and encourages empathy — focusing on whakawhanaungatanga.
20-30 minGroup Jigsaw Activity: Stories from Different PerspectivesEach group receives a short historical narrative (on slides or printed cards) from Māori, Pākehā settler, or other viewpoints about early settlement. They identify key feelings, facts, and perspectives, then share findings with whole class.
30-40 minHistory Kahoot or Similar Game: Review & ReflectA digital quiz or low-tech quiz game reinforcing learning points from the role-play and stories. Incorporate fun visual elements and encourage all students to participate.
40-45 minExit Card & Group ReflectionStudents write down one new thing they learned and one question they still have about Aotearoa’s early history. Discuss as a class briefly.

Teaching Resources Required

  • Slide deck with:

Pedagogical Notes

  • The lesson is designed as a tutorial style — prioritising interaction, cooperative learning, and engagement over extended writing or maths.
  • Emphasise whakawhanaungatanga through all activities; getting students to relate to each other and historical figures' perspectives.
  • Use multiple sensory modes: oral discussion, reading short texts, dramatisation, and interactive quizzes.
  • The teacher’s role is facilitator and encourager, guiding discussion and gently probing deeper thinking about perspectives and empathy.
  • Make explicit connections with the Values of the NZ Curriculum such as respect and diversity, and the Key Competencies including relating to others, thinking, and using language and texts.
  • This lesson avoids heavy literacy/maths focus while ensuring curriculum alignment with history and social science learning objectives.
