I want this lesson to focus on environmental impacts to the skeletal system with real-world case examples.
The previous 3 lessons we have looked at the skeletal system (labelling, and function), then muscle types... smooth, skeletal, cardiac and difference between involuntary and voluntary muscles, then finally the different types of connective tissue (tendons & ligaments). I now want a lesson looking at how the environment can impact the skeletal system with real world case examples (like lack of of vitamin D causing rickets)
Students investigate how environmental conditions can affect the skeletal system. Building on prior learning about bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, they analyse real-world cases and use evidence to explain impacts and suggest realistic responses.
Students will:
Instructions for students: Please work quietly and independently. Use the word bank provided to help with your answers. Ask the relief teacher only if you need clarification about the instructions.
0–5 minutes · Read and retrieval question. Read the learning intentions carefully. Then, in your exercise book, complete the silent retrieval question provided. Work quietly and think carefully.
5–10 minutes · Read student information. Read the information about environmental factors and their effects on bones. Take your time to understand the key points.
10–15 minutes · Worked example. Copy the worked example of one factor, its effect, and the body's response into your exercise book. Then complete the missing parts of the example using the word bank.
15–35 minutes · Case-study worksheet. Independently complete the case-study worksheet. Identify the environmental factor, the biological effect on bones, the evidence from the case, and the possible response. Use the word bank and work quietly.
35–42 minutes · Comparison task. Complete the comparison task by ranking two cases based on their environmental impact on bones. Write a justification for your ranking using cause-and-effect reasoning.
42–47 minutes · Extension or unfinished work. Complete the extension task if you have finished early, or use this time to finish any unanswered questions from the worksheet.
47–50 minutes · Exit response. Complete the exit response question and submit your work to the relief teacher.
Remember to work quietly and independently throughout the lesson. Use the word bank to help with your answers, and ask the relief teacher only if you need clarification on the instructions.
