Lesson Structure
1. Engagement (10 minutes) – The Mystery Map
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.
Materials: Large Australian map (classroom wall or floor), small magnetic Australian animal cut-outs (e.g., kangaroo, emu, crocodile).
- Gather students on the floor in front of the large Australian map.
- Display an Australian flag and ask: "Do you know where we live?"
- Point to the map and introduce Australia. Use simple terms: "Australia is a big country made up of different areas called states and territories."
- Place animal cut-outs in different locations and ask, "Which part of Australia do you think crocodiles live in? How about kangaroos?"
2. Explicit Teaching (10 minutes) – Discovering States & Territories
Objective: Teach students to recognise states and territories, focusing on the Northern Territory.
Materials: Colour-coded state and territory cut-outs, teacher-labelled Northern Territory area.
- Show a simplified, colourful outline map of Australia.
- Explain: "Australia has six states and two territories" — name them while pointing.
- Focus on the Northern Territory with a bright marker:
- "This is the Northern Territory. Have you heard of Darwin, Kakadu or Uluru? These amazing places are here!"
- Introduce a key fact: "Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived here for thousands of years."
3. Activity (15 minutes) – State & Territory Puzzle Map
Objective: Reinforce learning through a hands-on group activity.
Materials: Laminated map puzzle pieces of Australia (with states and territories coloured and labelled).
- Split students into small groups of four.
- Give each group a puzzle set and ask them to piece together Australia.
- Once completed, each group must find and point to the Northern Territory.
- Groups take turns sharing one interesting thing they learned.
4. Reflection & Wrap-Up (5 minutes) – "What Stuck With You?"
Objective: Reinforce learning and allow students to express their thoughts.
