Exploring Our Country
Lesson Overview
Year Level: Year 1
Subject Area: Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)
Curriculum Link: Year 1 Geography – The natural, managed, and constructed features of places and how they can be cared for (AC9HS1K03)
Duration: 40 minutes
Unit Title: Exploring Our World (Lesson 12 of 15)
Lesson Focus: Students will develop an understanding of Australia’s geographical features, major cities, and regions in an engaging and interactive way.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Identify the major geographical regions of Australia (coast, desert, rainforest, mountains).
✅ Recognise major Australian cities, including their locations on a map.
✅ Describe key physical features of Australia (e.g., the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru).
Resources and Materials
- Large physical map of Australia
- Small laminated maps for student pairs
- Colouring sheets of Australian landscapes
- Playdough or clay
- Picture cards of landmarks and cities
- Whiteboard and markers
- Indigenous Australian Dreaming story book (e.g., Tiddalick the Frog)
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
👋 Engage the Students
- Begin with a question: “What makes Australia special?”
- Show a large map of Australia and ask students if they can point out where they live.
- Briefly introduce the idea that Australia has different types of land (beaches, deserts, rainforests, mountains).
✨ Interactive Hook:
- Show picture cards with famous Australian locations (e.g., Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, Uluru) and do a quick “Guess the Place!” activity.
2. Exploring Australia’s Regions (10 minutes)
🌏 Mini-Exploration:
- Coastlines – Explain that most Australians live near the coast. Show pictures of Bondi Beach and the Great Ocean Road.
- Deserts – Introduce the red centre with Uluru. Discuss what it would be like to live there.
- Rainforests – Introduce the Daintree Rainforest and its unique plants and animals.
- Mountains – Talk about the Blue Mountains and places where it snows in Australia.
🎨 Student Activity:
- Give each student a “Match the Picture to the Region” worksheet to categorise different landscapes.
3. Mapping Major Cities (10 minutes)
📍 Mapping Activity
- Distribute small laminated maps of Australia.
- Call out major cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide) and have students place a small counter on the correct location.
- Use a short story: “Imagine you were a bird flying from Sydney to Perth – what places would you see on the way?”
✈️ Movement Break:
- Play a “Fly Between Cities” game: Call out a city, and students pretend to ‘fly’ to the correct part of the classroom that represents that city.
4. Hands-On Geography (10 minutes)
🖐 Create Your Own Australia!
- Give students playdough or clay and ask them to create a mini-model of one Australian geographical feature (e.g., mountains, islands, coastline).
- Share creations with a partner and describe them.
📖 Indigenous Connection:
- Read a short Indigenous Dreaming story to connect cultural significance with Australian landscapes.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
👂 Reflection Questions:
- “What is one new thing you learned about Australia today?”
- “If you could visit any place in Australia, where would you go and why?”
💡 Exit Ticket:
- Each student draws a quick picture of their favourite Australian landscape and names it.
Assessment & Differentiation
📌 Assessment Strategies:
- Observation of participation in mapping and matching activities.
- Listening to students’ descriptions of their playdough models.
- Checking exit ticket drawings for understanding of landscapes.
👫 Differentiation Approaches:
- Support: Provide pre-labelled maps for students who need assistance with identifying locations.
- Extension: Ask advanced students to explain why certain cities are built near certain landscapes (e.g., Why is Sydney near the water?).
Reflection for Next Lesson
✍ Teacher Notes:
- Did students engage with the interactive components?
- Were there any misconceptions about Australia’s geography?
- Which activities worked well for comprehension?
📅 Next Lesson (Lesson 13): Exploring Australia’s Plants and Animals!
This lesson plan ensures high engagement while aligning closely with the Australian Curriculum for HASS. The mix of hands-on activities, storytelling, and mapping exercises supports diverse learning styles in a Year 1 classroom. 🇦🇺✨
