Unit Title: Think, Plan, Create!

Lesson Number: 5 of 6
Lesson Title: Creating Our Solutions: Part 2
Duration: 30 minutes
Class Size: 16 students

WALT (We Are Learning To):

  • Finalise our technology projects by refining them using feedback and our own ideas
  • Work together and solve small problems as we create
  • Prepare to present our completed mahi to others

Success Criteria:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Add or adjust one thing to improve their solution
  • Talk about a choice they made while creating
  • Show their completed or nearly completed design to a classmate and explain what it does and why they made it
  • Use good listening skills when working with a buddy or teacher

Special Note on Integration:

This lesson naturally supports the Key Competencies from The New Zealand Curriculum, especially:

  • Thinking: Students reflect on and improve their designs
  • Using Language, Symbols, and Texts: Students use their own words and drawing/symbols to represent and explain their ideas
  • Managing Self: Students take responsibility for finishing their project and preparing for presentation
  • Relating to Others: Students are encouraged to give and receive kind and specific feedback

Materials Needed:

  • Student project materials (carryover from previous lessons – e.g. boxes, tape, fabric, cardboard tubes, paper, fasteners)
  • Scissors, glue, tape
  • Markers/felts
  • Mini whiteboards or revision planning sheets
  • Recording device/tablet (optional for capturing learning snapshots)

Lesson Breakdown

1. Mihi & Motivation (5 minutes)

  • Quick karakia or waiata to settle and focus learners
  • Teacher reminds students about their WALT and refers to the class poster from earlier lessons
  • Recap a few examples of work from yesterday, emphasising creativity and perseverance

“Last time we began building our wonderful solutions – today we're adding the final touches so our mahi is ready to share!”

2. Refining and Reflecting (15 minutes)

Students work independently or in pairs on their technology creations.
They begin by choosing one feature to improve or finish based on:

  • Teacher or peer feedback
  • Their own new ideas

Prompt questions from the teacher:

  • “Can you tell me which part you’re going to work on today?”
  • “What would make this work better?”
  • “Why did you choose those colours/pieces?”

Support and Differentiation:

  • Teacher roves and runs a mini check-in with each student
  • Peer buddies can give one positive comment and one helpful suggestion
  • Use picture prompt cards for students who need vocabulary/support

Optional Extension:
Students can record a quick voice message describing their product ("This is my monster-feeder. It helps pets eat when we’re not home!")

3. Partner Share & Class Gallery Walk (8 minutes)

Pair up and practise talking about their creation using a simple prompt:

“This is my [object]. It helps [person/pet/character] because ______.”

Then, students place their projects around the room for a roaming gallery walk (2-minute wander in twos).

Encourage looking with our eyes only unless invited to interact.

4. Wrap Up Circle (2 minutes)

  • Gather in a circle to return focus and reflect
  • Teacher chooses 2-3 students to share one thing they changed or are proud of
  • Reminder: Next time is our Big Share Day! – ask students to think about how they’ll present or introduce their awesome mahi next time

Assessment Opportunities

Formative feedback during:

  • Student-teacher check-ins
  • Peer sharing chats
  • Whole-class observations during the gallery walk

Look out for:
✔ Clear explanations of what their solution does
✔ Evidence they’ve made a purposeful change
✔ Confident use of design language (e.g. “I made this slot for the bones to go in!”)

Teacher Reflection Prompts (Post-Lesson)

  • Did students respond to feedback thoughtfully?
  • Were they able to verbalise their decision-making process?
  • How can we support less confident students for sharing in Lesson 6?

Links to Future Learning

Students will present their completed technological solutions in the final lesson. This will include an opportunity to practise oral language development, confidence building, and simple peer assessment using success criteria.
