Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Welcome and hook. Open with the opening question and picture of a whole apple and ask, “If two people share this fairly, what must happen?” Students turn and talk, then show with their hands how one whole might become two parts. Introduce the WALT and display the success criteria.

  2. 7–17 min · Build the language. Use a paper circle or classroom object to model whole, part, half and equal. Fold it carefully into two matching parts, deliberately show an unequal example, and ask, “Is this one-half? Why or why not?” Students repeat and use the sentence frame: “One half is ___ of two equal parts.” Revisit the explanation on the vocabulary and equal-parts slides.

Confer with individuals and ask them to point to the whole and each half.

  6. 53–60 min · Share and assess. Show two contrasting examples from the lesson using the review and exit-question slides. Students complete the oral exit prompt: “This is one-half because…” and show thumbs up, sideways or down for confidence. Invite two or three students to share precise explanations, then preview that next lesson will explore halves of collections.
