Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and prior knowledge Open with the hook and learning-intention slides. Display two contrasting wraps, such as one containing mostly refined carbohydrate and sauce, and one containing vegetables, protein and a wholegrain wrap. Ask: “Which wrap would keep you going for longer, and how do you know?” Students discuss with a partner, then share ideas. Clarify that “healthy” choices depend on balance, needs, allergies, culture and preferences rather than labelling foods as simply good or bad.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Build shared understanding Use the food-group and balanced-meal slides to review vegetables and fruit, grains, protein foods and dairy or alternatives. Introduce the terms carbohydrate, protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, flavour and texture in age-appropriate language. Using the review prompts on the peer-review and discussion slides, students identify one strength and ask one constructive question: “What could make this wrap more balanced?” or “How will the textures work together?” Designers revise one ingredient or explanation in a different colour.

  6. 37–43 minutes – Share and connect to the unit Invite three or four pairs to present their designs. Class members listen for evidence about nutrition, flavour and texture. Link the activity to the wider unit: food products are designed for users, and ingredient choices affect the product’s sensory qualities, nutritional value, cost and suitability. Revisit the plenary comparison slide and ask students to explain how their thinking has changed since the opening question.

  7. 43–45 minutes – Exit response Students complete the final prompt on the reflection and exit section: “One ingredient I would include is ___ because ___.” Collect worksheets as students leave.
