Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min – Engage and connect: Display a striking coastal image using the opening coastal image. Ask: “How could a plant or animal survive here?” Invite quick ideas about wind, salt, waves, heat, drying out and finding food. Introduce the WALT and explain that adaptations are features or behaviours that developed over many generations; they are not choices made by individual organisms.

  2. 5–13 min – Teach key ideas: Use the adaptation teaching slides to define:

  • Structural adaptation: a body feature, such as a shorebird’s long bill.
  • Behavioural adaptation: an action or pattern of behaviour, such as a shorebird feeding when the tide is out.

Discuss examples: dune plants with deep or spreading roots, waxy leaves and flexible stems; shorebirds with specialised bills and feeding behaviours; shellfish with shells and strong attachment; seaweed with flexible bodies and ways of holding onto rocks.   1. 13–23 min – Match challenge to adaptation: Place students in groups of three or four.   3. 36–41 min – Peer check: Students explain their profile to a partner. The listener checks: “Is the adaptation clear?”, “Is the challenge specific?”, and “Does the explanation show how survival is helped?” Students improve one label or sentence. Use the profile-check slide to display the prompts.

  4. 41–45 min – Plenary and assess: Show the final reflection slide.
