Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Engage and connect

Display a photograph of a beach after a storm and ask: “What has changed, and what might be difficult for a beach animal or plant?” Open with the beach-change introduction slides. Briefly revisit the previous lesson’s idea that habitats provide living things with what they need, such as food, shelter and space.

  1. 5–10 minutes – Model cause and effect

Introduce the words challenge, natural, human-caused, cause and effect, using pictures and gestures. Model one example: “Cause: strong storm waves remove sand. Effect: a shorebird may lose a nesting place.” Complete one example on the cause-and-effect organiser while thinking aloud. Emphasise that an effect is a likely outcome, not a guaranteed one.

  1. 10–14 minutes – Explain the station task

Place students in mixed-ability groups of four or five. Explain that each group will visit four scenario stations and record one observation and one possible effect at each. Use the station instructions and example to show the routine: read or listen, identify the challenge, classify it, then complete one section of the organiser.

Use seven accessible scenarios across the stations: storms, erosion, introduced predators, pollution, rubbish, trampling and climate change. Some stations can contain two related scenarios so all challenges are represented without requiring seven rotations.

  1. 14–30 minutes – Rotate through scenario stations

Groups spend about four minutes at each of four stations, moving when the signal sounds. Each station includes a photograph or simple symbol, a short scenario and a question such as “What could happen to a penguin, shellfish, dune plant or shorebird?”

This challenge may cause ____.” Partners check whether the explanation includes a cause, a type of challenge and an effect. Invite two or three pairs to share.

  1. 37–43 minutes – Class synthesis

Create two headings on the board: Natural changes and Human-caused changes. Add examples from the class, noting that some challenges can interact; for example, climate change may increase coastal flooding, while human activity can make habitats more vulnerable. Use the classification and discussion slides to ask: “Which challenge might be short-term? Which could continue for many years?” Address misconceptions respectfully.

  1. 43–45 minutes – Exit assessment

Students complete the final box on the cause-and-effect organiser: name one new challenge, classify it and explain one likely effect.
