Teaching Instructions

I want you to devise a worksheet about living and non-living organisms. I wouldl like 4 of my year 7-8 students to think outside the box and brainstorm to find clues and hints to find out what's living and what's non-living.

Make it 60 minute long class, with clear objective and reflection section below.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Mystery hook. Display a photograph or object sequence using the mystery hook slides: a seed, a flame, a robot, a dead leaf, a mushroom and a virus image. Ask, “Which of these could be alive, once alive or never alive? What clues would convince you?” Students silently choose one, then share a reason with the group. Record ideas without confirming answers.

  2. 7–17 min · Build the clues. Use the living-things teaching slides to introduce common characteristics: made of cells, using energy, exchanging materials, growing or changing, responding to surroundings, reproducing and removing waste. Explain that no single clue is always enough; scientists use a collection of evidence. Students help create a class “clue bank”, separating observations from assumptions. Clarify that a dead leaf is once-living, while a rock is non-living.

  3. 17–22 min · Team investigation briefing. Distribute the living and non-living clues worksheet. Assign four rotating roles: facilitator, evidence recorder, questioner and reporter. Model one example, such as a bicycle, using the sentence frame: “We classify ___ as ___ because we observe ___.” Students predict which examples may be difficult and write one investigation question.

  4. 22–40 min · Clue detectives. Students complete the worksheet in pairs, then compare decisions as a group of four. They classify examples such as a dog, tree, bacterium, mushroom, cloud, fire, seed, shell, robot and dead leaf as living, non-living or once-living. For each difficult example, they record at least two clues and one uncertainty. Move between students, asking, “What evidence supports that?”, “Could this have been alive before?” and “Would it be an organism?” Use the investigation instruction slides to keep the process visible.

  5. 40–50 min · Defend and challenge. Each student selects one debatable example from the worksheet and gives a 30-second claim-evidence explanation. The other students may ask one respectful challenge question, such as “Does it carry out all the processes by itself?” or “Is it made of cells?” Students may change their classification, but must record what evidence caused the change. Emphasise that changing an idea in response to evidence is good scientific practice.

  6. 50–56 min · Connect to cells and ecosystems. Return to the cells and ecosystem connection slides. Students discuss why a bacterium can be an organism even though it is single-celled, and why a dead leaf can be a biotic factor because it was once living. Students add a short explanation to the final worksheet question: “How do cells help us decide whether something is an organism?”

  7. 56–60 min · Reflection and exit check. Students complete the reflection box on the living and non-living clues worksheet and share one changed or strengthened idea. Finish with the reflection and exit slides showing: “Classify a seed, a flame and a bacterium. Give one piece of evidence for each.” Collect worksheets or hear responses individually.
