Lesson structure (20 minutes)

  3. 6–12 min · Create the concept map. Teacher distributes the local issue concept-map organiser and sets the challenge: include the issue, at least two links to each learning area, one evidence-based mathematical question and one possible school response. Encourage students to draw arrows and label relationships with words such as “causes”, “affects”, “can be measured by” and “could reduce”. Students work as a group of three, taking turns as mapper, evidence-checker and discussion leader; rotate roles after three minutes.

  4. 12–16 min · Pair share and critique. Teacher uses the pair-share prompts and asks students to form one pair while the third student presents to both classmates in turn; then rotate so each student presents. Students explain their strongest cross-curricular connection and receive feedback using two prompts: “A clear connection is…” and “A question or improvement is…”.

  5. 16–20 min · Choose and justify action. Teacher displays the action-planning and plenary slide. Students agree on one action the school could take, such as auditing litter near drains, reducing single-use packaging, improving bin signage or sharing information about stormwater. They record the action, who would need to participate, and one way mathematics could measure whether it helped. Each student gives a one-sentence justification before handing in the organiser.
