Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and revisit. Teacher displays a whole strip, a half strip and a quarter strip using the hook and fraction comparison slides. Ask: “How many quarter pieces make a half? How many make a whole?” Students turn and talk, then show answers with fingers or by drawing the pieces. Reinforce that all pieces must be the same size and that a quarter is one of four equal parts.

Advanced learners create several strips with the same total length, for example one half plus two quarters and four quarters, then prove they are equal by placing them together and explaining their representation.

  6. 54–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Revisit the WALT using the plenary and exit-question slide. Ask: “Which is longer: two quarters or three quarters? How do you know?” Students complete the final worksheet prompt by drawing or circling the correct order of one, two and four quarters, then orally explain their answer to a partner. Collect responses and invite two students to share different justifications.
