Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  2. 5–10 min – Make the improvement measurable Use the evaluation teaching slides to revisit possible variables: batter consistency, portion size, cooking temperature and presentation. Model turning a vague idea such as “make it better” into a testable statement: “If the portion is smaller, the pikelet will cook more evenly.” Emphasise changing one main variable and keeping other conditions as consistent as possible.

  3. 10–15 min – Plan in teams In groups of four or five, students review their earlier evaluation evidence and select one improvement. Distribute the pikelet improvement planning sheet. Students record the problem, proposed change, prediction, materials, method, safety controls and evidence they will collect. Groups may use the design thinking process cards as a visual reminder of the stages.

  4. 15–30 min – Test the improvement Groups prepare and cook a small comparison: their improved version alongside the agreed baseline version, where practical. Students follow the class recipe, measure carefully, use oven mitts and teacher-approved equipment, and keep hands, surfaces and utensils clean. One student manages equipment, one measures, one records, and one observes; rotate roles if time allows. The teacher supervises all heat use and checks plans before cooking.

  5. 30–37 min – Evaluate the evidence Groups compare appearance, texture, size, colour, taste and ease of making. They record observations and peer feedback on the pikelet comparison and evidence table. Prompt: “What changed, what stayed the same, and what evidence shows whether the improvement worked?”

  6. 37–42 min – Share recommendations Each group gives a 30-second report using the structure on the sharing and discussion slides: “We changed… We noticed… Our evidence suggests… We recommend…” Class members ask one respectful question or offer one useful suggestion.

  7. 42–45 min – Individual reflection and pack-up Students complete the final reflection on the individual recommendation section while groups clean work areas and return equipment. Invite two students to share how evidence, rather than preference alone, influenced their recommendation. Finish with the plenary slide.
