Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  5. 24–28 min · Explain the function. Teacher models an explanation: “A tree’s woody trunk supports its branches and leaves, helping the tree grow tall.” Students complete the worksheet prompt, “The plant’s ___ helps it to ___,” and share with a partner. Ask, “What might happen if a tall plant had no strong support?” Encourage students to connect structure with staying upright, holding leaves and growing towards light.

  6. 28–30 min · Plenary and check. Teacher returns to the opening comparison in the final review slide and asks students to show fingers one to three: one for trunk, two for branch, three for stem. Students give an oral or written exit response: “A woody plant is different from a non-woody plant because ___.” Collect worksheets or hear several responses to identify the next teaching need.
