Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Reconnect and hook Open with the hook and route image. Ask: “How could people move heavy goods from an inland river to a coastal trading place without engines?” Students silently predict which parts of the journey would use muscle, water or wind, then share with a partner. Revisit the unit route and explain that today they are investigating the power behind the journey.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Model the energy shifts Use the energy and waka examples and a large route map. Model a journey in three stages: paddling or poling in a river, drifting or steering with the current, and sailing along the coast when wind and sea conditions allow. Clarify that “nature-driven” does not mean effortless: people still needed knowledge, skill and careful decision-making. Briefly connect waka design to purpose, such as river manoeuvrability, stability, speed and carrying cargo.

  3. 12–15 minutes – Explain the challenge Display the model challenge and success criteria. Place students in three groups of three or pairs, with one group of three if needed. Distribute the route-model planning sheet. Explain that each group must create a physical or digital route model showing the route, cargo such as hue, waka type, energy source, environmental constraints and one safety or tikanga consideration.

  4. 15–29 minutes – Create a route model Students use the map and worksheet to plan and build their model with paper, blocks, string, drawing tools or a simple digital format. They label each stage with “human”, “water” or “wind” energy and add arrows showing movement. Prompt groups with questions: “Why does this waka fit this part of the route?” “What could make this stage dangerous?” “Where would the cargo need protection?” Confer with groups and offer the model example, energy icons and presentation template shown in modelling supports.

  5. 29–39 minutes – Rehearse and present Groups rehearse using the sentence frames on the presentation guide: “At this stage…”, “The main energy source is…”, “This waka/design is suitable because…”, and “The environmental constraint is…”. Each group gives a two-minute presentation. Listeners identify one strong link between energy, waka design and the environment, then ask one respectful question.

  6. 39–45 minutes – Reflect and assess Return to the plenary questions. Students complete the final reflection on the individual reflection section: “The most practical part of the route was… because…” and “One safety or tikanga decision was…”. Invite two or three responses and revisit the opening prediction. Acknowledge examples of Manaaki, Aroha, Niwha and Atamai during group work and presentations.
