Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Weather hook. Open with the rainstorm hook slide showing a dry garden beside a garden after rain, and ask, “What might change if no rain fell for a long time?” Students quietly think, then share an idea with a partner before two or three students contribute to the class.

  2. 4–10 min · Build understanding. Use the rainfall teaching slides to explain that rain is water falling from clouds and that water may soak into soil, flow across land into streams and rivers, or collect in places such as tanks and puddles. Students act out the three movements with their hands and identify examples near school or home.

  3. 10–16 min · Why rain matters. Display the picture prompts in the rain benefits discussion slides. Students discuss in pairs how rain helps plants grow, provides water for people and animals, fills waterways and supports gardens, farms and forests. Record responses under “Plants”, “People and animals” and “Places in our community”. Clarify that too much rain can also cause flooding and muddy paths.

  4. 16–22 min · Independent response. Distribute the rain and rain gauge worksheet. Students draw or match ways rain is useful, complete the sentence “Rain is important because…”, and label the rain gauge picture with teacher support. Circulate and ask, “Where does the water go next?” and “Who or what uses this water?”

  5. 22–27 min · Rain gauge investigation. Show the rain gauge instructions slides and demonstrate placing a clear, straight-sided container outside in an open area, away from roofs, trees and walls. As a class, predict whether the gauge will collect a little, some or a lot of rain, then choose a safe location and agree on when it will be checked. Students help decide what should be recorded: date, weather, amount of rain and observations.

  6. 27–30 min · Share and conclude. Return to the final reflection slide and ask students to complete the sentence, “Rain helps our community by…”. Invite several responses, revisit the learning intentions, and explain that the class will check the gauge after the next rainfall and compare observations.
