Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Reconnect and hook Open with the investigation hook and learning intentions. Display a photograph or simple before-and-after image from the previous investigation and ask: “How can we be more confident that our result is fair?” Students briefly share what they predicted and observed in Lesson 2.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Model fair testing and recording Use the fair-test model and recording example to revisit the independent variable (what is changed), dependent variable (what is measured or observed), and controlled variables (what is kept the same). Model one results table with headings such as time, what I notice, and measurement. Emphasise recording what happened, not what students expected to happen.

  3. 12–17 minutes – Plan the repeat or comparison In groups of four or five, students identify the variable they will change or compare and agree on at least two variables to control. They predict what they may notice, then explain their plan to another group for a quick fairness check. Prompt: “If we changed two things, would we know which one caused the result?”

  4. 17–32 minutes – Repeat the investigation and record evidence Distribute the evidence-recording worksheet. Groups carry out the agreed repeat or comparison, recording observations at the set times or stages. One student manages materials, one conducts the test, one records, and one checks the controlled variables; rotate roles if practical. Encourage labelled sketches, numbers where appropriate, and specific words such as larger, darker, slower, warmer, more bubbles or no visible change.

  5. 32–40 minutes – Organise and compare results Groups check their table or diagram for missing information and compare their result with the previous trial or another group’s result. Use the results-check prompts to ask: “What stayed the same?”, “What changed?”, “What pattern can you see?” and “Which observation is your strongest evidence?” Students circle or highlight two pieces of evidence.

  6. 40–47 minutes – Write an observational paragraph Students complete the paragraph on the evidence paragraph section using this structure: “We observed… The evidence was… This happened over time because…” They must include at least two observations or measurements and avoid claiming more than the evidence shows. Invite two groups to read their paragraphs aloud; classmates identify the evidence used.

  7. 47–50 minutes – Plenary and check for understanding Return to the plenary questions. Students show with fingers 1–3 how confident they are: 1 = I need help recording evidence, 2 = I can record it with a prompt, 3 = I can explain evidence independently. Collect worksheets and ask one final question: “Why is repeating an investigation useful?”
